This Alabama sheriff who wouldn't participate in 287(g) to aid immigration enforcement lost reelection after nearly three decades in office

Another MAGA victory took place earlier this week, but this one has flown under the radar a little bit.

Lee County, Alabama, home of Auburn University, has had the same sheriff since before the turn of the 21st Century. But on Tuesday night, Jay Jones was narrowly defeated, largely because he would not participate in basic illegal immigration enforcement.

Here's AL.com on the race:

A former Lee County deputy that was fired after deciding to run to become sheriff will now unseat the person that terminated him.

Cameron Hunt was elected to become Lee County's next sheriff Tuesday narrowly beating current Sheriff Jay Jones.

Cam Hunt launched his campaign against Jones because he was frustrated that the sheriff's office was not participating in the 287(g) which is a voluntary program that allows sheriff's offices to aid in immigration enforcement by holding illegal aliens for ICE and CBP.

Hunt was fired by Jones for launching this campaign, and Tuesday night it was Jones who was fired by the people of Lee County.

According to the Secretary of State's election results, Hunt received 51 percent of votes or 9,301 total to Jones's 49 percent totaling 8,994 votes.

Just 307 votes different between the two candidates.

And after 28 years, there's a new sheriff in town.

Makes sense. Contrary to what some think, Fox News isn’t what we knew and loved decades ago. That all changed November 2020. They are NOT pro-MAGA or pro-Trump.

Read the room, sheriff.

You would think a sheriff in a county that went for Trump by 28% would be smart enough to figure that out. I bet he thought he was more popular than Trump.

“I bet he thought he was more popular than Trump.”

It is difficult to be in office that long without thinking it belongs to you.

Nor should a “news” channel should be. Fox should be independent as should all the others. Aside from opinion shows (which is the evening time slot) the news should just be the news with no slant.

“should be” isn’t a thing any more. Sadly.

This is an important case to highlight the role of a county sheriff in a Constitutional Republic. The sheriff is elected by the citizenry of the jurisdiction he serves and, as such he does so at the pleasure of the people he has taken an oath to protect. This is opposed to police officers who are appointed by local elected party politicians. Unfortunately, in some parts of the country, the sheriff has been neutered, having surrendered his independence to state politicians, which itself may be unconstitutional. A Constitutional sheriff is a distinctly unique LE officer. The sheriff’s job is to protect the citizens of his county consistent with the Constitution of the United States and the laws of his state and he answers only to those who have elected him in the county of his jurisdiction.

All Florida Sheriffs are Constitutional Officers. The State Constitution requires each county to have a duly elected sheriff. Thus, they are solely responsible to the people. The Governor of course can remove any sheriff for crimes and malfeasance. Our sheriff was removed about ten years ago for embezzlement. He was arrested in Las Vegas. He had a gambling problem. Shocked everybody...................
