Kathy Griffin Shares She Was Hospitalized Over Complications From Colonoscopy

Kathy Griffin shared a glimpse into her health with an update while recovering from a medical procedure.

Kathy Griffin is on the mend.

The comedian gave a "TMI" update on her life, sharing that she was hospitalized after undergoing a medical procedure.

"I spent the night in the hospital because I had complications from my colonoscopy," Kathy shared in her May 21 Instagram post. "I know, I know, very sexy but I am home now with the doggies where I belong."

Alongside the screenshot from her Notes app, the 65-year-old also shared a selfie in good spirits. She captioned the post, "A not so tech savvy update."

The Suddenly Susan alum hasn't shied away from discussing her health concerns publicly, including her 2021 lung cancer diagnosis.

"I'm about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed," she wrote on Instagram that August. "I have lung cancer even though I've never smoked! The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage 1 and contained in my left lung. Hopefully, no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing."

She concluded her post, urging her fans to "stay up to date on your medical checkups" because "it'll save your life."

Although Kathy took the diagnosis in stride, it was still one she struggled to fully accept.

"Whether I like it or not, I think I'm a resilient survivor," she said on ABC News' Nightline at the time, "I was definitely in shock. I'm still a little bit in shock—not denial, but once a day I'll just turn to like, nobody next to me and go, 'Can you believe this s--t? Is this a b--ch or what?'"

But she was also looking at the silver lining, adding, "It's stage 1. It's nowhere else in my body. So I need to focus on that."

Luckily, three months later, Kathy shared a positive update on her journey.

"I'm cancer-free," she announced on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. "I don't know why I had a tumor. I've never smoked, and it was in there for 10 years."

Hmmm. Good idea, let’s wait until we HAVE the cancer to do something about it. Did you ever hear of Familial Polyposis?

First, there has never been a clinical study that show removal of polyps outweighs the risks of removal complications. More importantly, your GI spends 9 minutes in the colon and is looking for cancer through a scope visually. Third, aggressive cancers can kill you in two years. What is the colonoscopy interval? 10 if no history or prior polyps and 5 years if so and 3 years if both? You can do a Cologuard every year if you want or like I do: a cologuard then a FIT, another FIT and back to Cologuard in year three. Finally, there has never been a clinical study as to what is actually the colonoscopy false negative rate which is everything one worries about. Why? Because they can’t do a follow up colonoscopy on a person who has tested negative in clinical trials due to the risk of side effects.

So they claim “gold standard” but it is anything but. Actually a colonoscopy is useless except for the “lucky” person who develops colon cancer in the year before his every 5 or 10 year colonoscopy and gets his cancer detected.

My last one. The doc seemed to be trying to kill me no joke

I had nurses pressing A towel to my abdomen cuz the jerk was trying to push straight instead of turning at the curves

I went into shock for a short while that lasted a few minutes after he finished

They wheeled me into a room for observation for about 15 minutes

Could this have been a prog or Muslim murder attempt ?

$695?!! The seniors I know, who’ve had the Cologuard test, paid nothing for it.
Those who have had colonoscopy — I’m told the prep is worse than the procedure. Unless something goes wrong.

There’s also the new blood test, “Shield”, being advertised for detecting colon cancer. Not sure of the cost.

My insurance pays for a generic Cologuard test, so I do that. Have had two colonoscopies, and there must have been punctures because both times I came down with raging UTIs within a half hour after the procedures.

UTIs are too close to my artificial hips, and can create problems that last months. You don’t want any kind of infection in that area.

Because I’m at a higher risk of colon cancer, I’ve had numerous colonoscopies. I know there are risks to the procedure, but those are outweighed by the prospect of having an undetected colon cancer that has gone into later or even fatal stages. My mother resisted having a colonoscopy and subsequently died of colon cancer. Because of COVID, my usual colonoscopy was delayed by almost two years and I had four larger polyps where before I had only one. Fortunately they were removed and had not progressed to cancer. If you are over 50 or are at higher risk, get it done.

FIT is the stool scrape that tests for blood in stool. You scrape a probe on a stool before it hits the water,, stick it in a test tube and drop it off att he lab or mail it in. Uninsured it is from $39-$89.

A weak but protective measure for the intervening 2 years between Cologuard tests.

Point is a 5 year colonoscopy is just a roll of the dice that your colon cancer appears in the year before the test and that the gastroenterologist sees it. If the moon and stars align it is possible that a colonoscopy with perfect timing might see a cancer before it starts shedding DNA or bleeding and appears in Cologuard or FIT but that is unlikely.
