Bautista would not have been a good choice. He would have made Achilles look too slow, not athletic. Fighting is more then standing and bashing each other. The Rock could have pulled it off. I actually thought Pitt did a good job and I didn’t expect him too.
Regarding the tranny Paige; playing the ghost\shade of Achilles. Yes ghosts are supposed to be unsubstantial. Paige would be so unsubstantial to be unrecognizable. How would Odysseus even realize it's Achilles. The voice would have to be dubbed. No reason for Paige to even be there! Given that just use CGI to get the ghost effect.
You know, that’s actually a fair point re: Ajax versus Achilles. Even so, I always envisioned Achilles as someone who combined the mass and brute strength of Ajax with a martial skill. While Ajax’s approach was to batter his opponents down, Achilles could do it all. He could batter down even someone as massive as Ajax, while out-dueling even the most adept warriors like Hector with supreme martial arts skills.

I agree. Achilles is constantly described as “The swift footed”. From this, and the typical physique of the Greek warrior statues of that time, I take it that quick, violent attacks were favored. This requires a lithe frame with the over-developed glutes and hamstrings of a sprinter, which is exactly what the statues show us. Moreover, if you look at the surviving examples of Greek armor and helmets from the time, you’ll see that men were much smaller. Thus, it may be that the man-killing Achilles of 1300 BC was no taller than today’s fifth-grader.
