I know, but it has puzzled me ever since I saw the voting switch data, in 1936 it was a complete reversal and it never went back, maybe his statement wasn’t as meaningful as it sounds and it was just crude way to praise the bill’s politics even though it sounds so profound to our ears.
My friends and I were hit by cops with billy clubs circa 1967 for apparently making too much noise at a nighttime pool party.
I have a lot of cop stories, my impression is that they are less physically abusive today but police work gets its huge share of sleaze bags, and what the cameras don’t show are deals and moral corruption involving money and power they make during their careers along with the rest of the traditional corruptions of police work.
