President Trump is replacing his Secretary of the Navy as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues as a key chokepoint in the war against Iran.
John Phelan is leaving, effective immediately, and Undersecretary Hung Cao will become Acting Secretary of the Navy, the Pentagon said Wednesday in a surprise announcement. No reason was given for his departure.
“Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan is departing the administration, effective immediately,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Cao, a Navy veteran and failed Virginia Senate candidate, is well-liked by the president.
The secretary of the Navy oversees more than 900,000 people and an annual budget of more than $210 billion.
But the role of late has had one major task: leading the Strait of Hormuz blockade. The Navy is the lead military branch on that mission.
The Strait is essentially in lockdown as the US and Iran remain in a stalemate on peace talks.
Cao is a Vietnamese refugee who came to Virginia as a child and graduated from the US Naval Academy. He was in the service for 25 years with postings in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.
Trump praised his personal story and his military experience when he announced Cao’s nomination for undersecretary.
“Hung is the embodiment of the American Dream. As a refugee to our Great Nation, Hung worked tirelessly to make proud the Country that gave his family a home,” the president said.

Son of Vietnamese immigrants.
Is this what you do when you are winning? Because everyone on here says we are winning.
Who could have ever guessed that this would turn into much more cost than benefit? …..at least more for MY country. Certain other countries are definitely getting more benefit than cost.
“Undersecretary Hung Cao” brother of Hung Lo
Thank you for the info.
I don’t know, I see a lot of posts out there trashing. I’m thankful for excellant leadership in rough times. I do pray for Virginia, but I’m much more thankful for the big picture emerging from Trump’s leadership.
Bkmk
Secretary of the Navy’s job is not to plan wars, it is budgeting, ship building and recruiting. It has been a civilian role by law; it is one of the DoD roles that must be at least seven years removed from active military service.
War planning/fighting is more Chief of Naval Operations and Combatant Commanders. Combatant Commanders report directly to Secretary of Defense to execute actual war strategies.
I thought it was a euphemism for a bull.
The United States has an interest in Iran + China not controlling the flow of Middle East oil and LNG.
I follow this guy on Twitter, who has been a big advocate of more shipbuilding etc., has significant contacts in the Navy, Pentagon etc.
He has been both critical and approving of Phelan. This is his summary of what Phelan accomplished in 15 months (a lot) and what Phelan was falling short on.
Not a description of why Phelan was fired, but a good summary. And a good picture of the current status of the Navy, esp shipbuilding

I was thinking Gung Ho!
Good info
thanks, I hope people got something out of it.
Ya mean like when the Leftists take over the media and the folks at home decide that it's too difficult and boring to keep fighting, even though we're beating the snot out of the enemy?
Rages?
Korea and Vietnam were proxy wars we fought with China and Russia. Up until President Trump stopped the money and weapons flow to Ukraine that Biden's auto-pen set up, we were fighting another proxy was with Russia, but not with boots on the ground, although Zelensky would have loved that. Are we fighting a proxy war with Russia and China in the Strait of Hormuz? Only time will tell.
On the cover of his book, his uniform is that of a Navy Captain. Impressive guy.
