Can Europe save itself without the US?
American Thinker ^ | 5 Apr, 2026 | Susan Quinn

The problems with defense of Europe are complex. Europe not wanting to defend itself is only one of them.

Europe has been taking a lot of flak in the last two months in the midst of the Iran War, raising the question of whether its members are capable of or interested in militarily defending themselves.

An example is a serious conflict that arose recently when President Trump asked the Europeans to help the U.S. open the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait has been mostly closed to traffic by the Iranians, and Trump insists that the waterway should be an open and free passageway. Iran disagrees and wants sovereignty over it. The U.S. doesn’t access the Strait very often, but Europe does. Unfortunately, European states refuse to engage their militaries to keep the Strait open. To make matters worse, those countries where U.S. bases are established won’t allow the U.S. to use their territory or air bases. And Trump is furious at the European countries for their lack of cooperation:

The U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!

The fact that Iran has developed missiles that can reach the far reaches of Europe should be especially concerning. But Europe has stood firm. Although much has been said about the spike in oil prices due to the Strait’s near shutdown, prime minister of the U.K. Keir Starmer insists he won’t get into the fight and that the nation will simply need to bear the escalating prices. He believes that diplomacy is the best way to resolve these issues.

The problems with defense of Europe are complex. Only a few nations, primarily France, actually have a military industrial complex.

Agreed. The time is coming when each nation state will resist in its own way. probably not in unison. The Left globalists, the corrupt and the Muzzies must and will fail. So do my bride and I imagine to be the ultimate outcome. Lepanto 2.0? Perhaps Gates of Vienna, newly revised? Sooner or later, fraud bankrupts, globalism is resisted and one's identity -- German, English, and so on -- will be sought again, over the "unite" sirens trying to lure European nations on to the shoals of globalism.

A more pertinent question is, do they want to?

Europe is actually the community of hangers on who have sought protection by developing a village just outside the castle walls.

The genetic material that was Europe was seriously polluted during the last century. Europe in no longer the fittest and subject to invasion and hybridization by the less fit.

The future lies East Of Suez

Acoustic drone detection has evolved from niche technology to a critical layer in counter-UAS defense, driven largely by Ukraine’s deployment of over 14,000 ground-based sensors that helped achieve a 95% interception rate against Russian drones in documented engagements.

Europe is doomed. After the dust clears, most Europeans will be dead and property will be cheap!

Can, or will? I don’t believe they have the will.
They are terrified of being called racists.
They will give up their sovereignty and sacrifice their daughters to avoid offending third world aliens.
Europe dies with barely a whimper.

Your post is a great analysis of the situation.
However, I also believe their behavior to the US is a desperate attempt to deflect the serious economic crisis they’re facing. Starmer and Macron are despised by the citizens.

The camel’s nose and much more is under the tent; enemy inside the gates. Europe is being conquered by the Moslem with barely a whimper. Complain about your daughters being mass-raped and you’re the criminal.

Right. Europe doesn’t have external threats. The Islamic invaders are a dire internal threat. The no go zones are expanding.

How many REAL Europeans are left in the European Caliphate?

“Can Europe save itself without the US?”

The REAL QUESTION is whether Europe can save itself WITH the US. I have confidence that Europe is capable of dealing with their self-imposed situation, but ONLY if we cut them loose, because the situation there to effect the cleanup will have to be so ugly that it would make Hitler blush. No government, not even a Trump-like government, will be able to handle the carnage that is now necessary.

Europe is not focused on “saving itself,” at this moment. There may be some political posturing, but Europe’s main attention at this time is on how to bring about a humiliation of the US.

They are still jealous and resentful of America for subsuming Europe’s 19th century status as a center of world power.

Neville Chamberlain thought the same way, and we all know how that worked out after he came back from Munich waving his little piece of paper.

Hey Europe, the enemy is already inside the gates.

This author does not even mention that as a threat.
