Lights out in Colorado - The Rocky Mountain High state is heading for the rocks.

ocky Mountain high, Colorado,” sang John Denver, AKA Henry Duetschendorf Jr. in 1972. Those were heady days for Colorado. Ski resorts, the Rockies, natural beauty aplenty and the promise of new beginnings enticed many, including me, to move to Colorado. My stay on the west slope was brief, and over the years, Colorado has descended from a more-or-less business-friendly and affordable state to a Democrat People’s Republic, increasingly crowded and hostile to civil liberties and prosperity.

I occasionally travel to Colorado Springs for service on my recumbent trike and bike at the best recumbent shop in this part of the country. The traffic on I-35 is always horrific, driving through Denver is a nightmare and road construction and delays are eternal. I yet have friends and family in Colorado. My family worries about entrusting their still-infant kids to Colorado schools when the time comes. They also worry about Colorado’s increasingly draconian anti-liberty/gun laws.

They have other worries too. Colorado is facing a $1.5+ billion dollar budget shortfall, a half-billion more than expected. Republicans blame Democrat overspending. Democrats blame Republicans for noticing.

Coloradans are also noticing increasing power outages. Colorado currently is 26th in the nation for power outages and is 27th for the number of power customers affected. At Complete Colorado, Jon Caldera has noticed—when his lights have been on. He’s noticed that Colorado can be windy.

But only in the last few months have I witnessed our power utilities preemptively turning off electricity during high winds to “prevent fires.”

Caldera is suspicious:

Is Colorado suddenly windier than it has been during my entire life? Unless our eyes have been lying to us, the answer is comfortably: no.

Yet, I type this under an official warning that my power might be turned off because of another rather normal day

I-35?

It’s I-25 through Colorado.

We lived in Larkspur, halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs, and the power outages were happening more often as time went by. Every snowfall seemed to come with predictions of more outages too.

“Colorado used to be solid red.”

Nope. Never was. Is was solid purple, but a good purple. People voted fiscally conservatives, but socially liberal. Keep out of other people’s business but keep taxes low, keep regulations low, but provide the services government is meant to do.

However, the illegal aliens, potheads, and Texan and Kali liberals moved into the State in the 1990s. Colorado died then. It is now blue as can be. Even the State GOP is blue, backing democrap candidates instead of Republicans.

The wife and I moved to Colorado in the early 1980’s. It was a far different place then. We left in 2021 for Florida.

Haven’t been to Colorado in some time. I used to go there a lot, but am older now & seldom travel anywhere, but especially stay out of Colorado. That state is absolutely screwed up & dangerous now as I see it. They need to get the governor & the rest of their administration behind bars & then start over. So sad because it used to be a beautiful travel spot. Wouldn’t travel there now if they paid me.

I lived in the mountains between Golden and Boulder and to the west, just out of Boulder and Jefferson counties. I often commuted for work to the two AF bases in Colorado Springs so I know where Larkspur is....just south of Castle Rock.

Xcel Energy in Colorado settled a $640 million dollar lawsuit over claims that they contributed the Marshall fire, which destroyed over 1100 homes.

That is why they arrange to shut down power every time there is a minor windstorm in front range Colorado.

My opinion is that the liability claims were entirely bogus, aimed at Xcel because they have deep pockets. It was very clear that the Marshall fire was started by arsonists, and this was observed by passing drivers on highway 93 at the time. The arsonists got away clean.

Well, lawyers gotta make those 30% contingency fees for winning a case against somebody. I wonder where the rest of the money went. I have friends in the area, whose homes were affected. They got nothing from the settlement. They got lots of stalling from their insurance companies.

This is why we cannot have nice things.

The outer areas use CORE Electric Cooperative (formerly IREA). They simply seemed to have terrible connections to the grid.

I went to middle school in CO... we weren't allowed to graduate to HS until you've fired a rifle, shotgun, handgun, bow, and crossbow on the football field. It was a mandatory Hunter Safety Education course. Marine Sgt Alms was my teacher. We also tied flies, and learned how to survive if stuck in the mountains in winter, how to light a fire, how to make safety equipment, etc.

It's a much different place now.

There is one town I like in Colorado: Rifle. All the rest not so much.

John Denver, AKA Henry Duetschendorf Jr.

No wonder he chose a different stage name.

Once my wife and I were at a movie about time travel and someone (in the movie) asked, "Who the president in xxxx? The other character answered, "Richard Starkey". My wife and I burst out laughing because we seemed to be the only people in the theater who realized that was Ringo Starr's original name.

Looks like we’ll have to wait until 2030 to benefit unless they cheat on the census.

Agree. It would not surprise me if alot of the “social” issues, transcrap, blm, dei, homosexuality group, illegal immigration, sanctuary cities, are funded by islamo-cysts in order to destabilize the US....

Does the author intend to say I-25? He doesn't sound like a native.

You must realize that the fellow theater goers might be just as ignorant about other facts or factoids about history and cultural, political issues.
