New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Movie From Stephen Colbert and His Son in Development at Warner Bros.
Variety ^ | 03 24 2026 | Jack Dunn

Warner Bros. has revealed that Stephen Colbert and his son are developing a brand new “Lord of the Rings” movie. The announcement came Tuesday night via the studio’s various social media accounts.

The video announcement opened with “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson giving a quick update about the next film in the fantasy franchise: Andy Serkis’ “The Hunt for Gollum.” Jackson said of the project, which is set for release in 2027: “Andy is doing a terrific job. It’s looking amazing. The script is coming together really well and I think it’s going to be a really good film.”

Jackson then teased his “very special partner” who will help develop the next film after “The Hunt for Gollum,” titled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past.” That partner is none other than “The Late Show Host” Colbert, who Jackson patched in through a video call. Colbert, a vocal Tolkien fanatic, then explained that the plot of his movie will come from chapters of “The Fellowship of the Ring” that didn’t make it into Jackson’s 2001 adaptation.

When I first read the books, and started looking into the origins, I had read some papers on subject in my college days. In the 70s. I am sure it is all online if you search.

On my first reading of the Rings, 1967, age 15, I loved the books but recognized Bombadil as the true Appendix I. A vestigial character that was an oddly boring cul de sac. I skipped him in later readings. I got the point, no need to revisit a hermit Christ and his bodacious wife.

Morgoth, Beren and Luthien, Arnor, some other tales of the sillmarils that explain Sauron, etc. might work but colbert and amazons travesties tell me it would be instead be a DEI abomination/fabulous fest.
(gollum was bullied and teased...)

Colbert + Philippa + Tolkien = Fraudulent, feminized failure. The thought makes me hurl.

If you want to know why thus crap still gets money thrown at it...

Look at who owns and runs movie studios.

And I don’t just mean the political aspect.

Thank God for AI.

I’ll take DIY.

If he is a fan, he has no clue what he is reading. IMHO any Tolkien fan will lean conservative at a minimum, no way you can read those stories, understand them and have a strong progressive bent.

That being said I will not bother to watch, I just don’t see any good coming from it and have no desire to see only more desecration of Tolkien’s works.

Colbert is an absolute Tolkien fanatic.

He is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge regarding “The Silmarillian”

"The Hunt for Gollum."

SPOILER: They don't find Gollum, however they do return with Leonard Nimoy.

” the disinclusion of Tom Bombadil”

I always suspected that Tolkin’s Tom Bombadil represented God’s granting us with “free will”. Tom rescued Frodo, Merry, Sam, and Pippin in the old forest from the Old Man Willow, then guided them to his home which was “bathed in golden light”. They were fed and given a nice place to sleep, but had nightmares as they slept, but Tom taught them a song that would summon his protection. Next morning Tom gave them good advice but said he could not go with them on their journey. To me, this seemed like God’s protection, shelter, refuge, security, armor …. Yet giving of free will to use all that He grants us in our journey through life, while allowing us to take a different path (to our detriment) if we want.

A woke movie would not want to include any reference to this idea.
