Why Intelligent Life Is Unlikely | Nobel Physicist Richard Feynman Explains
YouTube ^ | February 18, 2026 | Richard Feynman

Posted on 03/15/2026 11:04:52 AM PDT by rexthecat

Why is intelligent life so rare in the universe? According to Richard Feynman, the odds are far lower than most people imagine. While the universe is vast, the emergence of complex, intelligent life requires a delicate balance of physical, chemical, and environmental conditions — conditions that are extremely unlikely to align perfectly.

For a genius, Feynman is short sighted. It seems that he bases “intelligent life” being equal to intelligent life here on earth in humans.

Why wouldn’t God create other intelligent entities in other places? They could be nothing like us insofar as appearance or requirements for sustaining life. But they could be intelligent just the same, and relate to/with God in a different way.

Is kind of arrogant to use humans as the baseline for intelligent life.

Who you gonna believe, some pinhead academic like Dr. Feynman or these two people? They have real-life experience!

Is there life out there?

Sure there is...

Is it self-aware and posting responses to a political forum on a computer... Nope! And likely nope forever.

We are unique and alone... People hate to admit it... They want aliens, bigfoot and that man in the grassy knoll to keep them company and maybe even tell them a story or two... But none of those things exist.

This version of “Feynman” is an AI—not the real Feynman. (For example, archaea were first identified late in Feynman’s life.)

Nevertheless, “Feynman” is right—the probability of intelligent life is infinitesimal at best, and the probability of spacefaring civilizations is even much much smaller. Even we are barely there!

The “aliens” that some humans have encountered are really demons!! Lord save us from the demons, who exploit our sinful minds!

Very true; in the absence of a creator.

God has devised infinity and eternity to confound the mind of man.

We’ve been waiting but ET has not phoned home.

Seems the cross of the New Testament and what it means for humanity would be the only bread crumbs we have to go on. Would that impact the rest of the created universe??

It’s a mystery but surely a sign from the creator that the best is yet to come.

Re: "Why wouldn't God create other intelligent entities in other places?"

Because...

Jesus Christ would have to die and resurrect hundreds of times?

Did you notice the top-left corner of the video's first few seconds?

Altered or synthetic content
Sound or visuals were significantly edited or digitally generated.

From the channel's info:

"The voice you hear is an AI-generated recreation inspired by Feynman's speaking style, created purely for education, inspiration, and storytelling. It is not original archival audio, and no impersonation is intended — only deep respect for one of the greatest scientific communicators in history.

"We create content to make physics, critical thinking, and curiosity accessible to everyone — whether you're a student, or someone who just loves big ideas explained simply.

"All videos are made in accordance with YouTube's policies, including clear disclosure of synthetic and AI-assisted media."

The AI channel was begun, in YouTube/Google's parlance, "Joined Jan 25, 2026"

“IMO, there is very possibly life on other planets...Just so far away we’ll never see them or they see us...”

Yes, I think logic tells us there are probably thousands if not millions of existing and extinct advanced civilizations in the universe. But they, like us, are bound by the laws of physics. Interstellar travel is impossible. The fastest thing in the universe is the speed of light.Just to even approach the speed of light would take more than the known energy in the entire universe to propel a load the size of a toaster to any nearby star.

Feynman and Einstein are both right. The enormous, unimaginable distances that separate Earth from even the nearest stars, the speed of light speed limit make it fundamentally impossible for alien biological or alien material to reach us or them. However if they do exist within sixty light years away, they have been receiving intelligible radio transmission which travel at the speed of light. As expected although credible people have reported and even photographed “UFOs”, no live aliens, alien biologial or manufactured materials have been undeniably identified. However what if intelligent aliens received our radio transmissions and sent transmissions that used our atmosphere as a video screen to reply? Would explain the “sightings” but no hard evidence. Probably juvenile aliens having some fun.

And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space
Cause there’s bugger-all down here on Earth

There are so many billion other planets that it is hubris to imagine we are the only other life form in the universe. That said, if any of those life forms have visited our planet, they have some technology that we don’t know in order to be able to deal with the radiation and time required.

Our Voyager spacecraft were launched in the ‘60’s and if they had been set on an intercept course to the nearest star to our Sun, it would take right at 100K years to arrive.

And then they make all that leap and end up crashing into a windmill in Aurora Texas? Was it un-licensed teen aliens that sneaked out one night in dad’s flying saucer?

exactly. All the billions of things that have lived on Earth, and only ONE “us” has real intelligence.
