I was a young teenager living in Subic Bay at the time, and the kid next door had the Fish Cheer playing max volume. It stopped suddenly, and his father took the album out back and smashed it against the top of the fence that bordered the jungle.

Dumb question maybe......why wasn’t he drafted?

Interesting because the “feel like I am fixing to die” is from Dylan’s first album, but I forget the song.

Fortunate to see him in mid 1969. They had a good little band.

Country Joe was a commie - but I always had a soft spot for "Save the Whales!". Save the Whales - Country Joe McDonald

Checking my memory...(no google)

Now, come on all of you big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again,
Got himself in a terrible jam,
Way down yonder in Vietnam,
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We’re gonna have a whole lot of fun.

Well it’s 1-2-3 what are we fighting for?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
Well it’s 5-6-7 open up the pearly gates.
Ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee, we’re gonna die!

(that’s all I got)

Wow, 10 minutes ago I was singing the Fixin’ to Die Rag to myself washing dishes in the kitchen. Came to me out of the blue; my high school garage band used to cover that. Always was a big hit at the sock hops. Then I sat down and opened up FR and there’s the first post that he has passed. Definitely strange.

Saw him/them at Woodstock . I’d just turned 17 and hitched rides from eastern CT with a buddy . Told my parents we had a ride to and back . Lied . Vividly remember The Who’s performance , but don’t remember Country Joe & The Fish at all . Too be honest , if The Who hadn’t played Woodstock I probably wouldn’t have gone . I liked CCR, Ten Years After , and a couple of other groups but wouldn’t have gone all that way to see them .

Thats so bad. I can’t believe anyone liked that. It’s like me making up goofy crap at home. Just awful. I’m not even talking about the lyrics, which are stupid too. Worthless garbage. People are so weird.

I won’t disparage him as I know little about him and don’t care to know any more than I do know.

I do give the man credit for what I do know.

He captured the moment at Woodstock.

It was a stupid war UNCONSTITUTIONALLY declared although the SCOTUS slow walked making that official until it became a mute issue.

The lesson was you NEVER risk blood and treasure when political objectives supplant military objectives.

Not sure the lesson has ever been learned by the puppet masters who pull the strings.

I first heard "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die" in the summer of 1968 and immediately recognized the melody. Country Joe ripped off Muskrat Ramble, a hit for Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five as well as its composer, Kid Ory, in 1926.

Not everything they did was political, or anti-war.

“Who am I”

Rest in peace, Joe.
