Any experience with 'Dumb' Flip Phones? [Vanity]

Posted on 03/07/2026 6:10:00 PM PST by Jamestown1630

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with 'dumb' flip phones, the kind they suggest for seniors.

My husband recently bought us fancy new 'smart' phones, and it's the first one I've had in ten years. It's huge and much more complicated than anything I've used before.

As I've been figuring it out, I've thought I'd like to supplement it with something smaller, simpler and faster when I'm out-and-about, something that just does phone calls, texts, and maybe has a radio, and fits in my pocket.

We've been looking at Jitterbug, Iris and some others; does anyone have experience with these and can share their opinions?

Thanks!

I’ll glad I am. We had a friend whose banking was destroyed because of a hack via email.

It sounds complicated, but it isn’t.

Yes, I need a calculator. Calculations for the machine shop or the electronics designs are slavish without one. You CAN use a corn cob for some things that is better served by toilet paper.

So you also don’t do email?

I used to use one. I bought it for $10 at Walmart and IIRC $100 for an annual plan. Very light. Small. Convenient.

Then tried the Apple SE3. Not much bigger. I can use GPS to time and measure runs. Use All Trails for hiking, to include GPS tracking some of the time (and can download a map before going). Texts are easy. Can read the Bible in a variety of translations. Check FR if I’m waiting somewhere.

I prefer it. Apple no longer makes the smaller phones, so when this one dies, I’ll look for a small Android phone.

“So you also don’t do email?”

We do email on about five other devices, just not on the ONE where we do financial stuff.
