I'm surprised it's been that long since an US Submarine has sunk an enemy ship using a torpedo. You wonder what the Captain and crew of that submarine were thinking when they finally fired a torpedo in a real war versus in training.

Looks like there was some kind of fire on the ship before it was struck by that torpedo. Was it attacked before that torpedo shot, or what am I seeing there?

IR video. You are seeing hot engine exhaust gasses.

The last few seconds of the vid shows 3 or 4 guys on deck heading for the bow. Preparing to jump, no doubt.

Right! Further the Belgrano was formerly WW II era light cruiser USS Phoenix (CL-46).

The MK-48 torpedo blows a ship clean in half.

I’m surprised there were 32 survivors.

Well yes and no. Once you let yourself be known by firing a torpedo, the hunter becomes the hunted. Good thing was this target had no backup vessels nearby.

What needs to be understood is the degree of precision being seen. An individual, specific target warship of a foreign navy was hunted down in mid-ocean, successfully stalked and killed with a single torpedo, in the dark.

This level of expertise and capability has never before been demonstrated. Twenty-first century naval warfare is light years ahead of past times.

This is what we spend trillions of dollars for.

Three cheers to the US Navy.

Was that a Boomer class submarine that fired the torpedo? Or do we have no ofher kind in service?

The cost of U.S. torpedoes varies significantly; for example, the Mk 48 Mod 7 torpedo costs approximately $4.2 million

More likely an attack class. Boomers tend to be shy.
