A former exotic dancer who made headlines for falsely accusing three Duke lacrosse students of raping her has been freed from prison in the 2011 slaying of her boyfriend.
Crystal Mangum, 47, was let out of the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh just before 10 a.m. Friday after serving a 14-to-18-year sentence for fatally stabbing beau Reginald Daye in April 2011, according to a report by NBC News.
Mangum wore a gray sweatshirt and khaki pants on her way out of the facility.
She was escorted in a corrections vehicle to Durham to live with a friend, corrections spokesman Brad Deen said.
Mangum admitted in 2024 that she had made up the allegations that David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann raped her in 2006 when she was performing at a Duke party with another stripper.
Former Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong was disbarred in 2007 for lying in court and failing to disclose information that would have cleared the three men.

Sick. At least one-third of the sentence her boyfriend would have gotten if roles were reversed. He’d have been in for life or face execution.

Did she get consideration for admitting she lied about the Duke boys?
My guess - she’ll do some other evil thing before long and be back behind bars. Although of all the things in the article, setting fire to her house with her own three children in it seems the worst.
I understand “false witness” is explicitly forbidden in the 10 commandments, but still, the arson thing seems extreme.
Well, maybe she’s all rehabbed now, for her sake, and her children’s I hope so.

Hopefully, she’ll OD soon, and they’ll find her on the side of the road, or somebody will perform a belated act of justice, and she’ll end up dead in a dumpster.
Maybe she and Mike Nifong can reminisce about their past collusions to hide exculpatory evidence.

I doubt it. She specializes in murder. She was convicted of second-degree murder in 2013 for the 2011 stabbing death of her boyfriend, Reginald Daye, and sentenced to 14 to 18 years. Mangum claimed the stabbing was in self-defense. This followed an earlier attempted murder charge in 2010 involving another boyfriend, Milton Walker, which was later dropped.
After graduation from high school in 1996, Mangum joined the U.S. Navy. She trained to operate radios and navigation technology. While serving in the Navy, Mangum married McNeill. Her marriage quickly broke down. Mangum reported to police that her husband had threatened to kill her, but the charge was dismissed when she failed to appear in court.[1] She served for less than two years in the Navy before being discharged after becoming pregnant by a fellow sailor, with whom she went on to have another child.
By 2002, Mangum had returned to Durham and was working as a stripper. In 2002, she was arrested on 10 charges after stealing the taxicab of a customer to whom she had given a lap dance. This prompted a police pursuit at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, occasionally in the wrong lane. After being stopped, Mangum nearly ran over a police officer, succeeding only in hitting his patrol vehicle. She was found to have a blood alcohol content of over twice the legal limit. Ultimately, Mangum pleaded guilty to four counts: assault on a government official, larceny, speeding to elude arrest, and driving while impaired. She served three weekends in jail, paid $4,200 in restitution and fees, and was given two years’ probation.
Just before midnight on February 17, 2010, Durham police were called to Mangum’s residence by her nine-year-old daughter. They said that, when they arrived, they found Mangum and her live-in partner, Milton Walker, fighting.[5] She reportedly set fire to some of his clothing in a bathtub in their presence. The building suffered heavy smoke damage. They arrested Mangum on charges of attempted murder, first-degree arson, assault and battery, identity theft, communicating threats, damage to property, resisting an officer, and misdemeanor child abuse.
For the sake of her children they need to be hidden where she will never find them.

I just read some of Wikipedia's info on the case. It says that Jesse Jackson and his Rainbow/Push organization, offered to pay Magnum's college tuition, even if it came out that she had fabricated the story. Now that Jesse is dead, I wonder if his group would honor his offer, if the murderess ever chose to go to college.
