Three members of my DeMolay chapter were frequently dinner guests at Gene Roddenberry's home. All three were very "in" to the Star Trek stories. All of us were neck deep in our college classes by that time.

He was a very gregarious guy. Roddenberry stopped at the college I was attending in 1981 with his traveling "Star Trek Experience" presentation, conducted by him and an assistant, where he played the original pilot. Nimoy was an emotional human character and eventual wife Majel Barrett was first officer, followed by "The Menagerie" pilot that was broadcast.

After these he spoke of how everyone rejected "Wagon Train to the Stars" - except Lucille Ball running Desilu Studios. Then a Q & A with the attending students. I had no concept at the time that it was a rare privilege and how Gene would end up being a major figure shaping our culture.

I never met Roddenberry. The three members of my chapter were Scott Norton, Jim Jira and Robin Peterson. I often wonder if those dinner discussions inspired any of his work.
