An ashen-faced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been pictured leaving police custody, following his unprecedented arrest on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
The former prince looked shellshocked as he cowered in the back of a car leaving Aylsham police station in Norfolk shortly after 7pm on his return to Sandringham.
Andrew, who turned 66 today, was detained by officers during an 8am raid on his new home at Wood Farm. In events that rocked the royal family, he became the first senior royal to be arrested in modern times.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the disgraced former prince had been taken into custody just after 10am on Thursday, marking one of the worst days for the family in recent history.
In a statement put out just minutes after Andrew's departure, Thames Valley Police said 'a man in his sixties' has been released under investigation - as images showed how the royal seemed to be trying to evade photographers following his bruising day in the cells.
Wide-eyed and with his hands clasped in front of him, Andrew cut a lonely figure as he ditched his traditional suit and tie attire in favour of a shirt and cardigan more suited to the setting that is so far removed from the upper echelons of luxury he is used to.
The photograph of the former prince, now stripped of all his titles and privileges, is sure to haunt the royal family in the days and weeks to come.

The late Queen Elizabeth foolishly protected and indulged Andrew, who was supposedly her favorite son. The result was that Andrew grew up stupid and without developing even an ordinary sense of caution and restraint.
In olden days, he’d be deep in the bowels of The Tower by now
Historically, monarchs acted as guardians of the nation’s long-term interests, while parliaments represented and advocated for the people’s will.
Obviously no longer the case today.
He transferred secret documents to a foreign power I think.
Andrew (defiantly):
They haven’t built the nick that can hold me.
The Royal family has gone to hell in a hand basket since Queen Elizabeth died.
I remember news stories and pictures of her in WW2. Brave and strong woman stayed in London most of the time against alll advice while bombs fell around her. . Didn’t want to abandon the public (her subjects) while bombs were causing death and destruction.. I was 5 then. Our family hfrequently heard her on radio news shows.
Sadly, her children didn’t inherit much of her strength.
Here in the USA people who live in government housing on government handouts are for the most part welfare queens, welfare princesses, welfare kings, and welfare princes. In the UK they call them “royalty”. LMFAO (or is it LSMFT?)
Blair with almost no Conservative pushback cut the last real ability of the Monarchy to restrain Parliament.
DOGE had Big Balls.
Harry Windsor has No Balls.
This is the first time in his sorry spoiled life that he has ever faced the music. Nothing like sitting in an interview room with the Popo asking tough questions to take the color right out of your face.
What do you want to bet that he gets the LIGHTEST slap on the wrist?
That was a mistake by the Queen as well.
She should have said "no".
Neither Sarah nor Andrew look very healthy to me.
She was not queen yet...her father George VI died in 1952.
It likely goes up higher than him—even though that’s pretty high!
But that goes without saying.
Jeffrey Epstein was not a British citizen. If Andrew transferred classified trade information to anyone I believe Andrew would be a traitor to Britain.
It will be crucial to follow how Epstein and others benefitted from Andrew’s deception.
There are persistent, quiet allegations that Elizabeth and the monarchy profited from lucrative private investment deals with Muslim nations and businessmen. Covertly, with Elizabeth's acquiescence, much of the British establishment was compromised and opened the country to mass immigration and Islamist subversion.
Will Farage be able to win and save Britain? I hope so, but he will not find the Muslim sympathetic King Charles an ally.
