How climate change will make hosting the Winter Olympics more challenging
ABC News ^ | February 4, 2026 | Julia Jacobo

Hosting the Winter Olympics will be more challenging in the future as global warming impacts host cities traditionally known for climates suitable for competitions such as skiing and snowboarding, according to climate scientists.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are about to kick off, but the Milano Cortina Games will take place in a much warmer world than in years past.

Average temperatures in Cortina, Italy, have risen by 6.4 degrees Fahrenheit since the region first hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956, according to a recent analysis by Climate Central. The warming trends have led to fewer freezing days and a shortage of naturally made snow.

"The number of freezing days, which is what you need to have snow, has dropped by almost 20%," Marcene Mitchell, senior vice president for climate change for the World Wildlife Fund, told ABC News.

As a result, event organizers were required to ship in 3 million cubic yards of artificial snow, despite the games taking place in the high altitudes of the Italian Alps.

The artificial snow is not as safe, Mitchell said, explaining that it's "icier" and a "riskier" surface for athletes to compete on.

The energy to make and ship the artificial snow also exacerbates the carbon footprint of the competitions that require snow, the climate experts said.

"To create artificial snow requires massive amounts of water and energy," Mitchell said.

It’s been a long time since I watched the Olympics. To me, they have been corrupted from the Greek ideal of balance in one’s life. Nowadays, Olympians seem to be professional athletes who have spent beaucoup bucks on training and equipment to shave 1/100ths of a second off the Silver medal performance. I also am uncomfortable with a two-week period every four years determining the world’s best athletes. You can be the best for years running then a cold or some other challenge affects that two week period and you become an also-ran. Of course, the money element and product endorsements corrupts also, just like it has done to beauty pageants and other competitions. Not to mention the virtue signaling so prevalent these days.

So I am not a fan of Olympics and couldn’t care less that the temperature might be a little warmer compared to seventy-five years ago.

When the North American Laurentide Ice Sheet returns, and IT WILL RETURN, the future Winter Olympics will be able to ski and bobsled from the North Pole to about Oklahoma. Last time, Chicago and New York were under a mile or more of ice. Present day New York will not Drill Baby Drill. Perhaps future New Yorkers will drill before they completely freeze.

I can just see a future Comedy Channel, with a special broadcast of AlGore and his minions stating “The Earth Has A Fever” as the audience shivers.

The winter Olympics were barely advertised this time. Barely anybody knew they were even happening.

So the WINTER Olympics should be held in either Greenland or Antarctica, and not someplace where winter could be warmer that year.

Makes sense. Sort of like not having hockey teams based out of Miami or Los Angeles. Oh, wait .....

The last games I watched any part of was the 2012 London for the summer and 2014 Sochi for the winter. Since then zip and abomination of the opening of Paris in 24 makes my not viewing a wise one.

Meanwhile,
Tropical Cuba registers first documented freeze!

HAVANA, Cuba - Cuba registered a record low of zero degrees Tuesday, the first time freezing point has been documented on the Caribbean island, according to its Institute of Meteorology.

A weather station in the northern province of Matanzas “registered a value of 0 degrees Celsius, reaching freezing point for the first time on Cuban territory and setting a new national record,” the Insmet institute said on its Facebook page.

The island’s previous record, of 0.6C, was reported in 1996.

The provincial meteorological center of Matanzas said frost had been reported on crops, a very unusual phenomenon on the usually hot, tropical island.

Isnt’ this the Lady who became an Internationally well known Paid Liar about a blood reading process that had no science backing it up? I think she’s still in prison right now, lifting her free-weights. Not even having a Baby got her out of serving time.
