Many years of drug abuse and he still made it to 83 y/o. That is a real tribute to the strength of the human body.

I knew a fellow who had managed a punk club in NYC. In 1982, he was SURE that Deborah Harry's substance abuse would lead to an early death. He was completely wrong on that one.
I had asked him if all those punks bands actually believed their own stage persona (he worked with them when they were "up and coming"). He said "No . . . except for The Talking Heads,"

Human body, or any animal body never ceases to amaze me on recuperative powers when treated with proper steps. I am living example. From bad health at age 56 now have no health issues at age 86. All achieved with change in diet and daily exercise of 10,000 steps walking.

Look at the Stones... three of them still alive in their 80s despite similarly rough lives. Beatles Paul and Ringo certainly partied hard in their youth, now in mid 80s. Brian Wilson almost made 83 despite a good 20-year stint of rock-and-roll excess.
It’s almost as the rock-star lifestyle is the embodiment of Nietzsche’s “What doesn’t kill me makes stronger.”
