The First Amendment Isn’t a Heckler’s Veto
When a radical mob that included former CNN anchor Don Lemon broke into Cities Church in St. Paul to protest ICE, were they upholding or violating the First Amendment?
According to everyone from Sen. Patty Murray to the International Press Institute, breaking into a church and interrupting a religious service is “First Amendment activity”. But if preventing other people from praying is “First Amendment activity” then what is the church service itself?
First Amendment activity entails expressing your opinion, your belief or your religious practice, but the moment your actions interfere with and prevent someone else from engaging in their expression or activity while they are within their space, it’s an assault on their rights.
The Left has normalized attacking churches and synagogues, like Adas Torah in Los Angeles, ‘occupying’ campuses and public buildings, even vandalizing them and assaulting employees and worshipers, while describing this vandalism and thuggery as “First Amendment activity”.
Democrat jurisdictions have created a heckler’s veto by failing to immediately arrest rioters blocking buildings and streets, harassing students, professors and parishioners, and worse still, often telling the speakers and events being protested that they need to shut down instead.
This has frequently happened to conservative events on campus which are shut down when a large enough mob blocks the doors, takes over the room and shouts down the speakers. And when Jews counterprotested Marxist and Muslim mobs at Adas Torah, UCLA or in Brooklyn, they were the ones arrested and were more likely to be subjected to court cases and trials.
The name for this state of affairs isn’t “First Amendment activity”: it’s the ‘heckler’s veto”.
The heckler’s veto allows the most disruptive group to block the speech of others and when that group also enjoys the patronage of the authorities, as it does in New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis, then when it escalates, it also enjoys a monopoly on harassment and violence.

The lawsuit filed in federal district court by The Gevura Fund and the National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) challenges the so-called “Values-Aligned Local Investments Ordinance,” which requires the city to divest public funds from companies that engage in human rights violations.
The ordinance was initially vetoed by Medford Mayor Breannna Lungo-Koehn, but the City Council voted 6-1 to override the veto in November of last year, according to the complaint filed by the Jewish groups on behalf of two city residents.
Although it does not refer to the Jewish State, the Medford ordinance was “primarily inspired by the ongoing events in Gaza between Israel and Palestine,” the Patch reported at the time of its passage.
There were other telltale signs of the motivation for the city’s measure. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) applauded Medford’s decision to divest from “Israel’s ongoing Gaza genocide.”

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) is the only organization providing accreditation to institutions offering CME, according to Do No Harm.
Miceli stressed to The Center Square that “physicians rely on CME to stay informed about best practices and remain licensed.”
“However, when these courses are filled with unverified claims, divisive ideologies, and political activism, they ultimately cause more harm than good, eroding trust in the medical establishment and hindering evidence-based clinical decision-making,” Miceli said.
“To preserve the value of continuing medical education, the ACCME, AMA, and other CME providers must prioritize scientific accuracy and improving patient outcomes over identity politics and pseudoscience,” Miceli said.

House Republicans passed the campus carry bill Thursday morning.
“We in New Hampshire have made it clear: self-defense is not a privilege,” said state Rep. Sam Farrington, R-Rochester. “It is a natural right, and natural rights are not given by governments. They are granted by God alone.”
Farrington, a student at the University of New Hampshire, notched a victory on the House floor as his bill to wipe out college campus gun restrictions passed on a vote of 188 to 165.
“We hear college students are too drunk, they’re too immature, they’re too young to carry a firearm,” he said. “My question is, how can we allow them to vote, then? And how do we let them go fight in a foreign war?”
All but one of the House Democrats voted against the bill.

Recently, ICE was compelled to withdraw from a job fair at Arizona State University following protests by faculty and students. Now, students will also be prevented from speaking with ICE at another job fair at the University of Maine, according to The Maine Campus.
ICE was removed from the list of employers on the university website following the outcry.
Various student groups and the UMaine Graduate Workers Union demanded that ICE not appear on campus. The Union posted a call for a protest, declaring, “Our campus community is safer without CBP on campus. It’s UMaine’s responsibility to protect all students and employees from possible targeting. We demand CBP be uninvited from this event!”
False rumors were spread about ICE raids scheduled to coincide with the visit, an obviously ridiculous claim meant to spread panic and protests.
These employees and students have succeeded in keeping other students from seeking badly needed jobs. They are effectively demanding that others limit their choices to employers that they find acceptable. The university has been largely silent during this controversy.

“We’re pleased the president will welcome governors from all 55 states and territories to the White House,” NGA CEO Brandon Tatum said in a statement obtained by USA Today. “The bipartisan White House governors meeting is a valued tradition and an important opportunity to build bridges and hold constructive conversations. The NGA looks forward to continued collaboration between governors and the White House.”
The White House meeting will be part of a three-day summit in the nation’s capital that will take place from Feb. 19 to Feb. 21. The meeting and subsequent dinner are scheduled for Feb. 20.

FTC chair warns Apple News it could violate consumer protection laws with alleged left-wing bias
Ferguson noted that Apple is required to comply with Section 5 of the FTC Act, which “prohibits unfair or deceptive acts or practices,” including “material misrepresentations and material omissions.”
Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson notified Apple in a letter Wednesday that the company could be violating consumer protection laws by allegedly stifling conservative publications on its news app.
The letter comes after a Media Research Center study found that 440 out of 620 stories that were featured on Apple News during high-traffic morning time slots between Jan. 1 and 31 were from left-leaning outlets, according to the New York Post.
“These reports raise serious questions about whether Apple News is acting in accordance with its terms of service and its representations to consumers,” Ferguson wrote in the letter.
He also urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to “conduct a comprehensive review of Apple’s terms of service and ensure that Apple News’ curation of articles is consistent with those terms and representations made to consumers and, if it is not, to take corrective action swiftly.”
Ferguson noted that Apple is required to comply with Section 5 of the FTC Act, which “prohibits unfair or deceptive acts or practices,” including “material misrepresentations and material omissions.”
“The First Amendment protects the speech of Big Tech firms,” Ferguson wrote. “But the First Amendment has never extended its protection to material misrepresentations made to consumers, nor does it immunize speakers from conduct that Congress has deemed unfair under the FTC Act, even if that conduct involves speech.”
