Man Excited for First Date—Not Prepared for Who Else Joins: ‘Bizarre’
Newsweek ^ | 1/28/2026 | Claire Dodds

A man’s first date with a woman he met online veered into unexpected territory when, just minutes into their coffee meetup, her entire family appeared at the next table.

The moment was recounted on TikTok by user Brian (@brianbrister), whose account of the date begins like many others in the online dating era: light banter over coffee, signs of mutual chemistry and early optimism.

But just minutes into the conversation, his date interrupted the flow with an unusual announcement: “Oh, by the way, my family’s here.”

“I was like, ‘Oh! They’re in town visiting, that’s so fun,’” Brian recalls. “She says, ‘No, like here, here,’ and points behind me.”

Turning around, he saw her mother, father and brother sitting just feet away.

Her mother soon joined them at the table, followed by her father. They didn’t ask—just sat down.

“Her mom comes over and pulls up a chair…and says, ‘So what do you do for work?’” Brian recalls, noting that her father had asked about his religious affiliations and long-term goals, including whether he was “of the Lord.”

Her brother, meanwhile, stayed silent—“just staring, menacingly”.

“At one point, the mom goes, ‘By the way, if this works out, Christmas is usually at our house,’” he continues, adding, “Works out how fast?? We’re on minute 12!”

Eventually, his 31-year-old date's father signaled it was time to leave. The family stood up, hugged Brian and walked out—taking his date with them.

“They all just walked out the door together,” he says. “I just sat there in complete shock and finished my coffee.

"The entire date start to finish was maybe 20 minutes and 15 of that was with her parents," Brister told Newsweek.

"I’m going to be single forever,” the 38-year-old Nashville man said in the video.

Mario Puzo’s portrayal of Sicilian culture, particularly in The Sicilian and The Godfather series, focuses on deep-rooted traditions of loyalty, vendetta, and the code of omertà (silence). He highlights a society shaped by foreign oppression, where, in the absence of trust in the law, people rely on "Friends of the Friends" (Mafia) for justice and protection.

Key Aspects of Sicilian Culture in Puzo's Works:

Omertà & Honor: A strict code of silence and personal honor is central, where betraying one's family or community is considered the ultimate sin.

The "Honorary" Mafia: Puzo frames the Mafia not just as criminals, but as a parallel, traditional power structure that offers justice, food, and protection to villagers, acting as a "Robin Hood" figure against corrupt, distant governments.

Vendettas & Loyalty: Life is defined by intense, long-lasting blood feuds (vendettas) and unbreakable loyalty to the family unit above all else.

Landscape & Tradition: He vividly describes the rugged Sicilian landscape—mist-shrouded mountains, ancient ruins, and small villages—where old-world customs of courtship, religion, and hospitality remain strong.

Resistance to Authority: A cultural belief exists that the only true justice comes from within the community, often forcing heroes like Salvatore Guiliano into conflict with both the state and the Mafia.

While Puzo was born in New York, his writing heavily draws on his heritage and research to create a romanticized yet brutal, authentic-feeling depiction of Sicilian life, exploring themes of power and survival.

LOL!!!

This story isn't about a couple of teenagers ... both parties are approximately 30 years old and grown-up adults. The behavior of the woman's family is sick and weird. Don't try to put a pretty face on it ... ever heard of putting lipstick on a pig? That's what you're doing, here.

Mario Puzo observed the culture.

There are a lot of cultures in the world of which I want no part. Mario Puzo included one (Or so we're to believe) in his work of fiction.

Enough said. I won't convince you; you're deeply entrenched in whatever. If you think this stuff is normal, I can't help you.

And that's where I stopped reading.

Use your own words; do your own research.

At least you had the minimal honor and decency to identify whatever you cut and pasted as AI. Thank you for that courtesy.

I guess you ignored US history in general back in the day. How old are you 12? Before Vietnam/Summer of Love that was the norm of dating ignoramus. You had a chaperons, mainly female, tagging you along in urban areas. If in rural areas the whole family would tag along, again, read some history books on cultural norms.

People some years ago promoted the fact that the family unit was the stabilizing force of civilization. You obviously get offended by families protecting civilization's interests.

BTW, going by your norms, what is the live birth rates compared to the mortality rate today? For history purpose during those dates overseen by chaperons, the live birth rates were a lot higher (Wife to Husband) than they are today. Why is that ignoramus? Perhaps families actually cared/protected future generations instead just saying f’ it, get your genitals off anyway you please.

Marriage has become a state controlled institution away from a religious commitment as it once was. The value placed on a piece of paper from the State outweighs almost everything else and then is used as a weapon by men and women alike for their own purposes.

I am 70 and never been married, but I have been in relationship that was loving and committed. My beautiful partner died three years ago. She and I were together for 27 years, for all intents and purposes we had a common law marriage, although that was not recognized where we lived.

Until The State become involved I think you could say a lot of marriages were Common Law, only they tended to be religious in some way and your marriage was recorded in the Parrish Book of Records.

And then there was this old guy living in a retirement home. He found a dating site for seniors called: Carbon Dating. He found a nice looking elderly lady albeit in her 90’s. She listed things she likes and BTW, before we go out, you’ll have to come over to meet my parents.

If your main concern is nuts and weirdos, just avoid the bar scene and be smart about where you go on the internet. You can browse the websites of worthwhile interest groups, reach out and make online conversation from a safe distance, and keep an eye out for real world get-togethers these groups organize; then the world is your oyster.

Apparently, you think being grilled by your date’s father, on a first date, is normal.

Apparently, you think being glared at by your date’s brother, on a first date, is normal.

I think both of those things, along with having your date drop them on you without warning, is weird, creepy, psychotic, and far from normal, decent, good, or in any way acceptable.

Also, you seem to be very angry, right now ... spitting insults in a way you absolutely would not if we were in the same room ... you wouldn’t dare.

So I have nothing further to say to you. No possible good would come of it.

I bid you good day!

Not even close.

In fact it was really common for men to lure women into marriages that were not legal for any number of reasons and then abandon them. We are talking all the way back in the 1400s.

You have no idea what you are blathering about.

By the way the state has ALWAYS been involved in marriage as it is a legal contract.

It is very sad that you did not think enough of your "beautiful partner" to marry her.

But I understand.

Only your wants and needs matter.
