January 2026 Snow Storm

Posted on 01/22/2026 5:14:26 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Nobody seems to have begun a thread for the snowstorm that is forecast for this weekend, so I thought I would.

Where I live (DC Metro area) a big snowstorm is relatively rare. We're the ones who don't really know how to drive in it because we don't get a lot of practice; and we also crowd the grocery store and wipe out the shelves - often for stuff we don't really need, and for a forecast that doesn't amount to much but flurries.

But once in a while, we really get whacked; and I think this may be one of those times. (My husband grew up in the wilds of Pennsylvania, and laughs at what we consider 'getting whacked' down here.)

I'm hoping we get lots of snow, and little or no ice; and hope everyone will be safe.

Let us know what you are doing to prepare, if you live where it might hit.

We had a record setting heat wave from Christmas until mid-January. Now, equilibrium has returned.

Maine, back when it was a decent state. My dad used to work out of a stepvan as a mechanic. It was tough work in the winters. And yep he’d have to shovel out sometimes too, but usus..y for the older customers who couldnt get out to do it thrmselves. Maine folks were more considerate though usually.

Used to get some pretty good storms on the cosst there. We’d tske the car to the seawall as the storms rolled in, and the waves would smash over the vehicle. We’d get out and wait till the net wave czme in and run for the car lol. The salt water was murder on them though.

Not sure why folks wou.d et upset about what you drank. In maine we’da joined ya

It makes no sense to me at all.

Who would be doing it, and why? What purpose does it serve?

We are supposed to get 1-2” of sleet and the other crap. I am sure tree limbs will fall and knock out the power. Variety is the spice of life.

[Who would be doing it, and why? What purpose does it serve?]

Those are the questions no one is answering. Not everyone wants America to be great again.

Well, a person must have a rational reason for believing something like that.

This conspiracy theory has been pushed for over 25 years; and there is no evidence at all that ‘chemtrails’ are anything other than contrails or that contrails have harmed us.

In the extent that I know of, it is a Massachusetts (Mass for you natives) and Rhode Island thing.

I was quick to learn in restaurants to order β€œtea” and a glass of ice.

I would be served a cup of hot water with a tea bag next to it.

Would do their silly process of soaking the tea bag and then pour it into the glass of ice.

That seemed to piss off the wait staff for some reason.

*Still looking for a reason, MA FReepers.

If you get 1”- 2” of FReezing rain & sleet, you’ll get more than broken tree limbs!

OTOH, sledding on ice is great fun!

I was on Google maps the other day, looking at the neighborhood where I grew up.

The steep hill that we used to ride our sleds down when it snowed looks like it has eroded to half the height I remember...

But on other streets, the trees are much bigger than I recall.

Of note & 1st time I’ve ever heard of this regarding a brewing snowstorm: A USAF Hurricane hunters’ plane was flown into the low off the CA coast to sample it / try to get better data.

Ohio and Indiana are flat as a pancake, it’s a lot easier to handle it. South of the Ohio River is not, it’s a different ball game.

I grew up in so Calif.
I lived in about every kind of horrible weather
in the many years since then, from super typhoons
to record breaking blizzards, to earthquakes and tidal waves.
Many areas I lived in were declared “disaster areas”
I seem to attract them.
Presently I live on the side of a dormant volcano.
I was in the military a ltttle less than 6 years.
So I experienced all this weather as a civilian.
Lots of good advise here, but the main missing one
is to always be prepared for anything and everything.
You don’t go shopping just before the disaster,
you should already have food.
I only own 4WD for travel and
I keep them fueled up always.
I always have water as I maintain an alternate supply.
I have cattle on my land. I say 5 ac minimum for a family.
All I can say to people that insist on living in crowded cities is “y’all made your bed now lay in it”.

Retired in very rural Hawaii.
