The US Coast Guard is searching for a 77-year-old woman who fell off a Holland America cruise ship miles away from the shore of Cuba.
Officials said an unidentified woman fell off the Neiuw Statendam on Thursday about 40 miles northeast of the Sabana.
In a statement the Coast Guard said the Air Station Clearwater MH-60 helicopter crew and the crew of the Cutter William Trump are assisting in the search.
The ship was expected to make a seven-day journey throughout the Caribbean, returning on January 3, following its departure from Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.
In a Statement to the Daily Mail, Holland America was saddened to confirm that the guest went overboard.
The company said the captain and crew initiated search-and-rescue procedures and are searching the area, working closely with the US Coast Guard.
'Our family assistance team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts are with the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time,' wrote Holland America.
The cruise line noted that the ship’s planned stop in Key West, Florida, on January 2 was cancelled as a result of the incident.

Those drunken brawls are typically on four or five day cruises which are cheap enough to attract certain demographics.

EXEMACTLY. The more expensive the cruise is, always better crowd in ship.
those smaller ships are most likely very nice, but they are always much more pricey. Try any 10+ day cruise on RCCL or Norwegian or Holland America. The passengers will be from better class.
Alaska is beautiful during early part of season. By May lit of of ice is melted. We did half a dozen Alaska cruises when we lived in WA state.
Best cruise was 14 day on Norwegian Jade sailing from Southampton, UK, with stops in Portugal, Spain, South of France, Monaco and Italy. We purchased flights and transfers all from the cruise company to eliminate flight delays causing us to miss the cruise. We saw so much if Europe in comfort of the ship as our moving hotel.
Not Holland America. It’s the geriatric cruise line. My favorite.
We went on a cruise and saw one of the barefoot ships in port. We loved the look of it, and finally in 2000 we got our barefoot cruise. It was wonderful!
I’ve four cruises on Holland. Great cruise line. You’re right. You won’t see drunken brawls on Holland.
Carnival has plenty of low cost, four or five day cruises out of US ports with drink packages. Essentially, the kind of cruises that attract a demographic inclinded to brawling. That said, Carnival also has seven+ day cruises that do not attract that demographic.
We went on the Flying Cloud.
It was based out of Tortola, BVI.
It did a ring around Tortola and stopped at the various BVI islands like Virgin Gorda, Salt, Jost Van Dyke, Cooper and a couple others.
We were in a cabin on the lower deck that was 6’x10’ including a head.
An upper and lower bunk.
We were on our Honeymoon.
It was a great way to see all the islands like you would on a private charter.
We eventually went back to Tortola a couple other times and rented villas.
I will always look back on that trip with great memories.
