Pete, I must confess that I haven't been following the goings on in West Taiwan the way I have in the past.

I have been mostly focusing on getting through the day. I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow afternoon about my right knee. I had a torn meniscus repaired in 2009. It probably needs some more attention.

In the mean time I have been getting used to using a cane. It does seem to help. Unfortunately it means that I now have to use one of the mobility buggies at Publix. I managed to stay out of them for 15 years but I think I am now stuck with them. Crap.

To try and answer your question, calling CCP internal politics Byzantine is a gross over simplification. This is one of the reasons I have never been a fan of "The Chinese are going to take over the world" narrative. West Taiwan has so many internal problems Somalia feels sorry for them.

L.P. Meniscus. Ouch! Painful! I hope you can get it done endoscopically and that it you heal quickly. (I had a shredded meniscus that they finally removed in 2005. No fun but the nurses were cute!)

The Cart. Well, we are fortunate to live in this time and place where Stores supply you with transportation to get around in the store so we do not have to sit at home and have the expense of hiring someone to shop for you. I know you already know this without me saying it and and yah, it still feels like crap.

China. I think that the economics and politics discussed in your Broken China pings has pretty much come to pass. You cannot rely on any accounting by banks or businesses. People's savings are tied up in apartments that will never be paid for or built or if built, are all kinds of shoddy. The people have decided to not support the CCP by not reproducing and not working more than they have to.

CCP Power politics. They have the rosters and scorecards, but from our standpoint, a bit like A game of "Capture The Flag" with camouflaged players in a dense forest with 5 or 6 teams, no sidelines and, like Native American La Crosse, people die playing the game. Xi keeps taking out Generals, the question is, who till take out Xi?
