Yes. Avoid the past tense. He has not died. It sounds serious, but he does not seem like the type who would not fight.

Dear Lord,
Please watch over this good man. Give his medical team the knowledge and skill to diagnose and address the serious health issue he has encountered. If it is your will, restore him to health, allow his voice to carry to a nation, even with its flaws, still a force for good in this world. Give him strength, hold him close, and comfort his family in this trying time. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray to you.
