Droubay said her family's housing costs doubled, but their New York life is a dream come true.

I have been pleasantly surprised by how kind 99% of people have been. I will get to the subway, and before I even fold up my stroller, strangers pick up the other end and carry it for me. Everyone stands up and offers seats to my kids, or older women have even grabbed one of my kids' hands and helped them on or off the subway for me.

This reads like the Bee, but apparently it is true from a family in desperate need of an intervention.
Sociologist Matt Wray of UNLV originally deemed this swath of the United States the suicide belt when he noticed the suicide trend in the early 2000s. Looking closer at the data, he determined several key factors that could lead to these states' high suicide rates.
"The Intermountain West is a place that is disproportionately populated by middle-aged and aging white men, single, unattached, often unemployed, with access to guns," Wray told Freakonomics Radio in the 2011 episode "The Suicide Paradox."
The byline of the article states the story is “as told to” Pettyjohn.
She made the whole story up. It’s fake. The subject family never existed.
I think you have anecdotal evidence of some incivility of some folks in New York. I have over 50 years of such anecdotal evidence and I have seen the good as well as the bad, and find most generalizations are wrong.
I think the trauma of the two women was instrumental in them projecting their experience to “all” women in New York. The data does not support their claim, unless most all women in New York are lying.

Was she just referring to Manhattan or all the boroughs of NYC?
I guess I’ve only known unattractive women in NYC because I’ve never heard of such a thing.
How do you know that?
Looks like Park Slope in Brooklyn. One of the whitest neighborhoods in the city. I’ll bet they never go east of Flatbush Ave and send their kids to private school. They’ll find out soon enough.
Good neighborhoods are everything in any big city. You don’t have to live in the outer ‘burbs and endure a two hour commute if you can find a good neighborhood.
And if you can afford the higher housing costs that good neighborhoods command, because avoiding the commute appeals to so many people that they bid up housing.
I was not asking you about data—I was asking you about your experience with women you know.
Getting to the truth is tough on this one.
Very few. Most are vile, evil and corrupt.
I have known dozens of women in NYC and none, none, have had a rape, sexual assault or sexual predator event.
OK—thanks.
