The California DMV is facing a lawsuit brought on behalf of nearly 20,000 immigrant truckers over the state’s plans to revoke their commercial drivers’ licenses (CDLs).
The Asian Law Caucus and the Sikh Coalition, along with the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in an effort to stop the California DMV from canceling the CDLs, which the complaint says would “result in mass work stoppages” starting Jan 5, 2026.
“This class-action lawsuit is brought on behalf of the Jakara Movement and five commercial drivers who have been deprived of their rights and livelihoods,” a joint statement from the Asian Law Caucus and Sikh Coalition said. “According to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle and KQED, California state officials communicated they would begin reissuing licenses on December 17. Despite these public assurances, the state has neither reissued any of the contested licenses nor created a process to remedy the date issue with no indication that it plans to do so before January 5.”
The lawsuit alleges that on Nov. 6, the California DMV notified 17,299 immigrant drivers and business owners that their non-domiciled CDLs would be canceled on Jan. 5, 2026, due to an error with the expiration date of the licenses.
A similar letter was sent to an additional 2,700 drivers in December, informing them that their licenses would be canceled in mid-February.
The DMV is required to set the expiration date for a CDL given to an immigrant on either the same day or before the expiration of the driver’s work authorization or legal presence documents, according to the lawsuit.
However, the lawsuit alleges that the DMV letters violated California procedure, which would require the department to either cancel the license without prejudice or change the expiration date.

Wow. Suing over NOT being allowed to break the law. The times they are a-changing.
Round the trespassers up and throw them out of the USA !
They are not “migrants.” They are criminals violating U.S. federal immigration law.
Criminal aliens playing hide and Sikh with the law.
“Suing over NOT being allowed to break the law.”
Well said!
The faster we can kick these criminals out, the faster we can remove the danger of mass trucker strikes that cripple California’s economy.
Train American drivers as fast as you can so these illegals can’t threaten our safety.
So illegals now get standing to use our own courts against us too? Who authorized this, Democrats?
Would be MUCH more productive to round up the sue liars...oops, I meant sue Lawyers and kick them out of the courtrooms.
So this is not from the Bee?
Sad thing is, I could see them winning this, with all these liberals in charge of everything, especially the judiciary.
lol... they have no legal standing.
For many years I have stressed that there is only one God given right and that is to be conceived as that is the only right that is actually controlled by God directly. Everything else is a privilege because it carries responsibilities.
A God given right cannot be revoked. A privilege can. It is not God’s decision to do some of the things we do. It’s man’s through the free will God provides. This is one of them. Privileges carry responsibilities. Rights only require existence.

But it’s kind of funny someone is suing the government for making an “error”. Think about the options. The government wins and we still cannot sue the government for “errors”. Or the liberal judges set a precedent of awarding the plaintiff judgement which opens the door to sue California for every “error”. I can think of thousands suing California over a massive fire…..
Where in the US Constitution are the rights of law breaking illegals enumerated?
Yes. My head is spinning considering all those possibilities.
(Isn’t it true that government, being sovereign, must give citizens permission to sue them? Or is/was that applicable only to Federal government? Government can “just say ‘no’”.)
What I have found out is that you can sue anyone for anything. Doesn’t mean you are in the right or that you’ll win. I could sue Free Republic for using the word ‘Free’.
Standing schmanding - they’ll win temporarily and kill more people before
it’s sorted out
I think you DO need to draw a distinction between illegal and legal immigrants. No illegal should be issued any kind of license.
As far as legal immigrants go, they should be able to speak/read English proficiently and pass the same tests as US citizen truckers for their CDLs. No double standards should be allowed.
“same day or before the expiration of the driver’s work authorization or legal presence documents”
Not sure these are illegals.
