Is There a Santa Claus?
The New York Sun ^ | September 21, 1897 | Editorial Board

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.

Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.”

Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

That’s a little like Isaac Asimov who as a precocious child did a mathematical calculation of the time required for visiting each home and told his little friends he didn’t believe in it. And he was also Jewish so didn’t celebrate Christmas anyway.

His young friend John Campbell who later edited Astounding always won hide and go seek by using US Navy search tactics of the area around him. Not any fun.

Yes, of course there is a Santa. How else could the world’s change one of the two holiest days in Christendom into a pagan ritual? Just look at how well the pagan Easter bunny suplanted the resurrection of Jesus.

Good one! Today’s modern Christmas/Holiday Season came about through Hollyweird during WW2 to boost morale on the home front. Bing Crosby’s White Christmas was a push. Before that, Christmas was a more private affair with no “25 days before Christmas so get your shopping done” and started a countdown to it.

My friends never get why I ask St. Nicholas for a set of brass knuckles.

I was a very skeptical and inquisitive child.

But—when I saw Santa in the mall that was good enough for me!

Of course there’s a Santa Claus! I’ve been him.

And at other Malls and other Malls, etc. He sure did get around.

My parents were clever—they made sure to only take me to that one mall—so I never saw Santa Claus anywhere else.

If I had seen another Santa Claus elsewhere they would have had a disaster on their hands.

Lol.

Oh yeah, especially if they saw Santa on TV in another city.

For little kids it is an early example of “cognitive dissonance”.

The smarter ones eventually figure out that adults should not be trusted.

Lol.
