A Christmas show at a church in Plano, Texas, has become a flash point in America - a Rorschach test in today's hyper-political culture.
The 'Gift of Christmas' at Prestonwood Baptist Church, as the nearly two-hour extravaganza is called, has become one of the most well-known holiday shows across the US, mostly thanks to social media. People seem to either love or loathe the 'Vegas-style' production at the mega church- complete with a flying Santa Claus and live camels and sheep- with tickets selling from $20 to $71 per person.
'Tell me how a family of 4 has to spend $200 to go but that's considered "community outreach,"' one critic wrote online.
'Jesus would be flipping tables y'all.'
Other churches across America who have comparable Christmas spectacles (Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square in Salt Lake, Elevation Church at multiple locations in the south, Birchman Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas) do not charge for their programs.
However, the Plano church says there's nothing wrong with putting your best foot forward for Jesus.
'Nothing is too extravagant for Christ. We bring our very best offering. If we do anything less than our best, then it’s not acceptable,' lead worship pastor Kaleb Moore Moore told Texas Monthly.
The show's organizer defended it as a cherished holiday tradition that reaches people who've never heard about Jesus Christ.
'The Christmas show here is extraordinary, and it is over the top and it's designed that way as an outreach for people to come into the church,' Andy Pearson, the church's creative director told Fox 4.
'It is not a normal Sunday morning experience. Our Sunday mornings are free, they're amazing, I encourage you to come and be a part of them, but this is something in addition to that.'

OK. I see that you have no evidence of “Prestonwood Baptist Church” demanding peoples’ financial documents in order to determine a tithe.
Thank you.
Have a nice day.
It’s just rage-bait. Nothing more.
I don’t recall the alpacas and peacock this year. Don’t forget the lasers, smoke, and fireworks. And the ‘Queen of the North Pole” on her flying saucer(or was she a witch).
They’ve always had a Santa Clause portion and a religious portion, but it seems that the religious part has been pared back. And less use of live cast and more projection screen work than in the old days.

I want to see Billy Strings do that. He did go up on a simple lift last Halloween and sing "Bitin List".
We see in churches their Christmas shows are extravagant. “The Christmas Pageant” at First Baptist in a larger city nearby is one example. Some churches are doing full-on shows with aerialists, dance troupes, and full-on shows that take everything away.
Our church had a big Christmas show and tickets were free. They sold out 3500 seats in a day. Half the people who bought free tickets didn’t show up. After that they charged $5 a ticket and it sold out the same day. Again it wasn’t enough money for people to be committed and there were still empty seats.
If they charged $50 a ticket, it might have taken longer to sell out, but when you have $50 invested, you’re going to make it a point to show up.
Nope, sorry, couldn't locate a pear tree.

Danny could use the work!
The Prestonwood choir and Orchestra is as good as or better than most big city secular orchestras. If I wanted to see a show like this put on by a professional choir and orchestra, the starting tickets would be in the range of $200 each and the good seats would be $1000 each.
This event gives hundreds of elementary through high school kids an opportunity to be a part of this event and it keeps them away from their phones for many dozens of hours while they prep for this event.
The ticket prices probably won’t recoup the cost. The kids who participate in this event have a lifetime memory of being part of this event.
Surely that should be worth you investing $71 to witness that.
How many will it takes to clean up the mess they make?
They could get Andy Partridge, but I don’t think he’d go real well there if he played “Dear God”.
Always has been about money not about Christ.
Jesus Christ!!
(not swearing)
What did you really expect from a religion?
Under.
Those of us over 50 saw it in theaters the first time around and watched the movie and the series on TV. Some of the real dinosaurs even read the book!
Maybe they were still taking the scenic route home from Mt Ararat?
Hmm, I always thought charging admission to a church would be nice and they wouldn’t have to beg for dollars. One Church I went to had a donation kiosk when you entered. You could donate by credit or debit. Not every Church is like Joel Osteen’s.
well, it’s a show, not a service. People are free to not go, right?
Or is it obligatory?
