Detroit finally has a RoboCop statue

Nearly 15 years later, Detroit finally has its statue of RoboCop.

The bronze statue depicting the eponymous cybernetic star of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 set-in-Detroit sci-fi satire was installed in Eastern Market on Wednesday, nearly 15 years after someone proposed it in a viral social media post.

Back in 2011, someone with the Twitter account @MT (no, not us) tweeted at then-Mayor Dave Bing that Detroit should have a statue of the part-man, part-machine cop because “Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & RoboCop would kick Rocky’s butt.”

“He’s a GREAT ambassador for Detroit,” the tweet continued.

The idea got even more attention after Bing’s office responded to it. “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop,” Bing tweeted at the time. “Thank you for the suggestion.”

According to Verhoeven and the other production crew, that character’s name is Bixby Snyder, star of It’s Not My Problem. Apparently the only sitcom in the RoboCop universe.

I remember seeing it when it came out. There was a lot of killing in the movie.

Wasn’t it filmed in Dallas?

Red Forman left his wife Kitty and their two children, Laurie and Eric, behind in Point Place, Wisconsin before turning to a life of crime in Detroit.

Interesting because it was actually filmed in Dallas, TX. I was in the building they were filming several scenes.

A statue of ED-209 would be more appropriate for Detroyette.

It was a very cartoonish movie, although the theme questioning the boundary between human and machine was interesting.

Paul Verhoeven wanted it to be as violent as they could get away with. He thought it made the movie funnier.

When Robocop addresses street criminals, does he call them “Bro”?
