The ex-boyfriend of the National Guardsman who was shot dead in Washington DC said she wanted to make a difference despite being spat on by the public.
Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injures on Thursday after her and fellow guardsman Andrew Wolfe, 24, were ambushed while on duty near the White House on Wednesday. Wolfe remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Her former boyfriend, Adam Carr, whom she dated for six years, said Beckstrom had been treated poorly while on duty.
'She was like: "People spit towards us, cuss at us, throw things at us, and we can’t do nothing." She couldn’t detain nobody. She couldn’t stop them from doing wrong. They told them to call the cops,' he told CNN.
Carr said the 20-year-old questioned why they were deployed to DC if they 'can't do nothing' and that Beckstrom thought it was 'pointless' because of it.
Beckstrom joined the West Virginia National Guard because she wanted to make a positive change and was hoping to do so while in DC when she was deployed there in August, Carr said.
'She wanted to make a difference. She wanted to extremely,' he told the outlet.
Beckstrom was tragically not able to complete her dying wish, as Carr said: 'She got deputized in there, and they gave them no rights to do anything.'
Beckstrom joined the National Guard in 2023 with dreams of working for the FBI, Carr said.
Her family spent Thanksgiving by her side until she passed away that evening with her father Gary Beckstrom holding her hand, he told The New York Times.
Carr remembers his ex-girlfriend as caring and someone who enjoyed nature and road trips.
'[She] had a huge heart,' Carr told CNN.

They were there to free up law enforcement to go out and make arrests.

Some troops are armed with handguns or rifles. The military only allows troops to use force “as a last resort and solely in response to an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm,” according to the joint task force.
It was that story... specifically, a news story about how some returning soldiers were spat upon at JFK airport, in 1970 or '71... that caused me to think my very first conservative thought. At first I thought "that's not fair!" Then, after thinking about it some more, I thought "that's really an awful thing to have done."
I was 15 or 16 years old, and I remember it distinctly. A lot of kids in my high school styled themselves as "antiwar" and hippies. That was pretty much the prevailing attitude among my suburban classmates, although the kids from the more rural areas didn't agree.
So by thinking it was wrong to spit on our soldiers, I was venturing into the counter-counterculture, for the first time in my life.
I thought that her age was reported as 23.
I’m certain most were and also tourists.
She was because the killer used her gun to shoot her but the boyfriend said she had told him that if there were issues for NG to call the police to handle it.
I watch a live Cam in Louisiana now and then. I saw around 6 National Guardsmen, all armed, walking the streets.
He is grieving also, she was his girlfriend. That is more important than the nation being sad.
And he has a good point. Why were they there if they could not respond to people spitting on them?

I haven’t heard of him doing anything. Just makin promises to review visas and renew new ones.

You don’t free up cops by replacing them with people who are not allowed to take action.
I can personally attest to that fact that the ones that spit on them and called them “baby killers” are now actually killing babies.
