Why socialism resonates with Gen Z and Millennials across the US

For many young Americans, the 2008 financial crisis was more than a downturn; it was a defining life event. Families lost homes to predatory mortgages, jobs vanished overnight, and college graduates faced bleak opportunities. For organizers like Gabe Tobias, watching low-income immigrant families lose everything to adjustable-rate mortgages was transformative. The crisis convinced many that capitalism itself was stacked against working people, a belief that would later fuel their political activism, the Wall Street Journal reported…

Polling shows that socialism resonates strongly with younger Americans. A YouGov survey this year found 62% of people aged 18 to 29 held a favourable view of socialism—an unimaginable figure during the Cold War. For many, the ideology is less about Marxist theory and more about housing, healthcare, and wages. As tenants’ rights organizer Genevieve Rand put it, “Why should I care about saving democracy if it can’t provide me a home or food I can afford?” This practical framing has broadened socialism’s appeal and pulled it into the political mainstream.

Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary for New York mayor in June, represents the culmination of nearly two decades of grassroots work. His charisma, use of social media, and ability to mobilize immigrant communities mattered—but so did the seasoned network of organizers forged through crises, campaigns, and movements since 2008. His victory signals that socialist politics is not only viable in America’s biggest city but potentially ascendant.

…Groups like the DSA Fund are now focused on governance, not just winning campaigns. The goal, they argue, is to turn electoral victories into durable policies on rent control, healthcare, and climate. For Tobias and others, Mamdani’s rise is “just step one” in a longer fight that began with the trauma of 2008 and continues to shape America’s political future…

Thank you for referencing that article CondoleezzaProtege.

Polling shows that socialism resonates strongly with younger Americans.

Are pollsters first asking people to define socialism? Or do people who may not have a clue what socialism is just following the possibly leading questions of activist posters?

You’re blaming the victims of globalism. Maybe just maybe capitalists made some self destructive mistakes?

“Why should I care about saving democracy if it can’t provide me a home or food I can afford?”

The purpose of a REPUBLIC is to protect the fruits of your labor, not to satisfy your whims.

I don’t see it as “predatory Mortgages” being the problem, Massive FRAUD and Stupidity on the borrowers part was the problem, thousands of Bankers should have been thrown in PRISON for the fraud they committed

My Russian grandmother made sure I knew about communists. I have despised their lies since I was six years old.

Because the baby boomers destroyed this country and the young people have nowhere else to go

Crony capitalism is a system where businesses gain advantages not through competition or quality but through their political connections. Companies with ties to government officials receive favors like special contracts, tax breaks, or relaxed regulations, giving them an unfair edge over others. This distorts the free market, reduces competition, and often leads to corruption, higher costs, and less innovation.

Trump needs to take some antitrust actions.

The U.S. beef-packing industry is highly concentrated, with the top four companies—Tyson Foods, JBS USA, Cargill Meat Solutions, and National Beef—controlling roughly 80–85% of the market. Tyson and JBS each hold around 20–25%, Cargill about 15–20%, and National Beef roughly 14–15%. This dominance means a small group of processors largely determines cattle prices, plant capacity, and supply-chain dynamics across the entire beef industry.

thus, every employer in town complains about not being able to hire people who are willing (or want) to work for the peanuts they offer.

Fixed it.

Socialism and communism will always be popular among people who think they can get something for nothing and there’s an endless supply of them.

Why should I care about saving democracy if it can’t provide me a home or food

As she's scrolling on her thousand dollar iPhone while getting her nails done while getting her eyebrows pierced and her entire left arm tattooed after which she'll go back to her cardboard box and binge watch the latest season of her favorite reality show on her thousand dollar 60" flat screen brought to her by her satellite dish as she eats day old top Ramen

Breaking up the media conglomerates would also be another good start.

Because we have destroyed the free market while calling it capitalism. Ask a millennial what system governs our healthcare, which has been under increasing government control since the 60’s, and they will say it’s capitalism.

They want change from the current system and I don’t blame them. Because they think the socialism and corporatism that strangle our lives today is “capitalism” they want the opposite of that.

Because falling for socialism is a mistake everyone makes unless:

a) they are competently taught why it’s a bad idea
b) they realize it’s a bad idea through their own intellectual effort
c) they are enculturated to reject it as a bad idea

says the entitled boomers who had access to cheap housing and high paying jobs in their youth and now young people have low wages if any, no good jobs because they all go to foreigners, housing is impossible for the young because they are all filled with illegals and h1b’s, and saving money is impossible

I’m acquainted with a large number of students and faculty at three universities. Most are, at minimum, sympathetic to socialism. Most are somewhat capable of studying economics, but they don’t. I would say almost none of them have read a single textbook on the subject. Doesn’t keep them from admiring Sanders, Mamdani and the like.
