One of my favorite things to do here at JoBlo is to highlight obscure movies that deserve a lot more love. One of the best movies I’ve ever covered is Peter Hyams’ 1981 movie Outland. A kind of quasi sci-fi remake of High Noon set on Jupiter’s Moon, IO, it stars Sean Connery as a Marshal set to enforce law on a mining colony who finds himself marked for death by the company administering the moon when he discovers a conspiracy. They hire gunmen to take him out, and with no one on the moon willing to help him, he has to take on the killers alone.
What’s particularly interesting about Outland is the period in which it was made. In ’81, sci-fi as a genre was in an interesting place. Star Wars had changed the game back in 1977 by introducing cutting-edge special effects, which allowed filmmakers to tackle science fiction and fantasy in a way no one ever really could before. But another very influential film was 1979’s Alien, a distinctly adult take on the genre, which introduced elements of horror. Outland is very much an offshoot of Alien, with it almost feeling like a spin-off of sorts, with the ominous company administered by the main villain (an against-type Peter Boyle) feeling like Weyland-Yutani.
Thankfully, the good folks at Arrow Video have given it a deluxe 4K re-release, and this new edition is gorgeous. The movie looks superb in 4K, and it’s packed with interesting extras that explore its unique place in cinema history.
If you’ve never seen Outland, I highly recommend picking up this new set as its a movie ripe for rediscovery. It has tons of action, Connery in top form, a classic Jerry Goldsmith score, and that iconic Alien vibe.

Oh yeah. Peter Boyle does great as well.
Who doesn’t love shotguns in space! 😁
I watched part of the movie, it seemed OK but not great, also read the novelization by Alan Dean Foster. I couldn’t figure out why they had to go clear to the moons of Jupiter to mine ilmenite, since that’s not exactly a rare mineral on earth.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
I saw it in theatres with my dear older brother, may he rest in peace.
We always watched SciFi movies together, and TV shows like Space 1999 and Star Trek too. He was that rare older sibling that wasn’t embarassed to be seen with his kid sister. I miss him so much!
Absolutely an awesome movie. It has some slow parts, but once the assassins show up the movie really finishes well.
I remember it.
Great writing too:
Dr. Marian Lazarus: take two aspirin and call me in the morning. That’s a doctor joke. [...]
Marshal William T. O’Niel: Did you do autopsies?
Dr. Marian Lazarus: No.
Marshal William T. O’Niel: Why not?
Dr. Marian Lazarus: In the first place, the company wanted the bodies shipped out quickly. In the second place, when a person exposes himself to zero-pressure atmosphere, there isn’t a whole lot left to inspect. In the third place, you’re becoming a nuisance.
Marshal William T. O’Niel: [blocking her path] Yes, I know. I would like a report of all of these incidents that have happened during the past six months. I’d like it really soon. Or I might just kick your nasty ass all over this room. That’s a marshal joke.
ZARDOZ!
I believe we can add Highlander in the mix. Another great Connery flick.
His character is gross, and exiting the bathroom without washing your hands is gross.
I thought it was a terrific movie.
Most memorable line: “this blood is from a dead person.”
Is it possible to fire a shotgun in the vacuum of space?
I’m gonna have to look it up.
Some movies inspire entire fashion trends. Molly Ringwald’s fedora. Neo’s black trenchcoat. Tom Cruise’s Raybans. Zardoz, not so much.
I liked it
Very well, fun movie - High Noon in Space.
Peter Boyle was excellent in his role, Connery being Connery is always a win. Barbara Sternhagen as the doctor was a real fail - just miserable.
Who doesn't love a 'splody head?
Explosives normally carry their own oxidizer with them, so the answer is "yes."
Nothing that needs air to burn can burn quickly if it doesn't have access to a lot of air fast. That leaves out the tightly-packed charge in a shotgun shell.
Just think of all the effort an internal combustion engine has to go through to get enough air in to burn it's fuel charge efficiently on each piston stroke.
The only exception is "FAE" bombs, but they have to disperse and atomize their explosive charge before detonating it. They use sophisticated methods to do this, getting as much air as possible around each explosive droplet before setting them off with a timed detonator.
Sean Connery is very Sean Connery-ish in it but it’s a pretty formulaic man-against-the-system actioner ... only set on one of the moons of Jupiter... or was it Saturn?
LOL!
