I was a light user of USENET before WWW, but used GOPHER, ARCHIE and FTP through universities and tried out Delphi. If I saw it, it didn’t stick with me.

They used it and other abbreviations a lot in discussions.

That’s the first place I saw things like IMHO, YMMV, etc.

My old mentor from the Bell Telephone Laboratory told me, “One man’s mnemonics are the other man’s hieroglyphics.”

PDFs are fine. Much more respectable than an HTML page. If I want to keep it, I can save the file or print it.

I just wish the young could write decent technical documentation.

“ If you get this exercised over mere abbreviations, I wonder what happens when you see actual typos...”

Stuns his beeber, no doubt!

So far it seems every bit as believable and likely as many other theories on many things that are promoted on this site.

Did I ever tell you about my theory that bigfoots are members of the lost tribes? See the story starts on this raft that floated into a cave, when the progenitors of 3 of the modern remnant tribes...
Marshall, Will, and Holly
On a routine expedition
Met the greaaaaaaaaatest earthquake ever knooooooooooown
Hiiiiiiiiiiiigh on the rapids
It struck their tiny raft
And plunged them down a thousand feet below
(Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!)
To the Land of the Lost
To the Land of the Lost
To the Land of the Lost.

Well, I mean, theres more to it but youll have to read my book.

I guess your readings are not technical.

My reading includes plenty of IT, not at the doctoral level, but certainly qualifying as technical.

(10) In point 3 of para 8, he pokes fun of people who observe that p depends on abundance. But this criticism falls back immediately on the p-ignorants, because the resulting bias (e.g., occurrence more often observed in the centre of a range, where abundance may be greater) is built into their analyses. Wrt to occupancy models, there are ways to acount for detection heterogeneity (e.g., Royle-Nichols, Ecology, 2003; Royle, Biometrics, 2006); though, admittedly, they may not be without problems (c.f. Link, Biometrics, 2003).

That would be “It”, not “IT”.

Most of my technical reading would some in the form of publications and books, not so much chats between tech people. However, I used to spend a lot of time on slash-dot, and those users would be as likely to use acronyms as anybody.

Most books about ancient history only go back a few thousand years, this one goes back more like around 100 thousand.

Topics covered includee the formation of solar systems by the activity of cosmic electrical (Birkeland) currents, the relation or lack thereof between humans and hominids such as the Neanderthal, and the elationship between the people of Genmesis and pre-Adamite/CroMagnon humans.
