Is Greyhound Really Going Out of Business? Debunking the Myths and Unveiling the Future

The short answer is no, Greyhound is not going out of business. While the iconic bus line has faced significant challenges and undergone major changes in recent years, including an acquisition by FlixMobility, it continues to operate and evolve in the face of a shifting transportation landscape. However, understanding the full picture requires delving into its history, recent developments, and the broader context of the intercity bus travel industry.

I live a 1/2 mile away from a Greyhound stop at a local convenience store, when I walk there, I see the people who are waiting for the bus, I would say 50% have their luggage in plastic trash bags.

God bless them, I don't travel anymore, got groped by TSA in 2021.

“...is going out of business...”
I thought they already were out of business.
I figured they were part of the past, like Blockbusters and Radio Shack.

Waiting for someone to respond by saying Greyhound can cut costs with AI self driving busses.

Greyhound became one of the travel methods of choice for illegals from South of the U.S. many decades ago. Riding on it is like being in Walmart, only super concentrated.

You couldn’t pay me 5 figures to ride on it for more than a few blocks.

I was patted down in Japan on a trip last Spring - by a female border agent! (at a cruise terminal)

I briefly considered going thru security again.

Radio Shack was the essential store for stealing cable. Fond memories.

That’s coming ... All future public transportation will eventually be self-driving/flying. But I see that a ways off.

They aren’t in Canada anymore, except maybe one or two routes.

Cars are just too cheap these days and too convenient.

I can’t deny that Greyhound Bus travel was a big part of my life, some 40 years ago, especially during my college years, going from Detroit, Michigan to Columbus, Ohio.
We passed a lot of White Castle Burger and Stuckey’s Breakfast restaurants in between.

Knoxville used to have a Megabus stop (they used the KAT — Knoxville Area Transit — station).

Greyhound closed their station and last I heard they drop off people at a street corner.

Back in 2019 we took Greyhound from DC to NYC where we transferred to a bus to Boston. Let me tell you, there’s a different type of people at the NYC bus station at 2AM.

We took the bus because our July 4th DC-Boston flight was cancelled due to a rain delay and Trump speaking at the Lincoln Memorial. We could hear the fireworks, but didn’t see them.

If you go Greyhound book early because the fares double when you get close. I travelled 500 miles this year and there were eight stops and one bus change in Nashville hub. The customer service in Nashville was the worst I have ever encountered. The guy coordinating the hub was deplorable. I would have fired him on the spot. The initial fare was $75. Make sure you have someone pick you up on time if it is a major city. They need to be there on time. The leg that was mostly Hispanics was fine but the other leg mostly you know who was a zoo. Just keep your mouth shut, act dumb, and you will be OK. It saved driving an extra car 1,000 miles which was cheap for $75.

It was a 2 week cruise plus some Tokyo time on the front end. 7-8 port cities plus Busan SK. Don’t remember the city of the pleasant encounter.

😜

I really, really liked Japan, had a wonderful time.

Greyhound has been going out of business forever. Even foreign competition like Stagecoach (Coach USA, Megabus) and Flixbus, with the COVID nonsense piled on top (which did end their subsidiary Bolt Bus), doesn’t seem to kill it.
