A true legend.
First heard of him from Pat Metheny’s 80/81 record.
Rest In Peace, Jack.
Looking at his Wiki page - whom DIDN’T he play with?
RIP.
One of the all-time greats, and played with many other greats over the years.
The challenge would be to name some important jazz artist or artists of the past 60 years DeJohnette had NOT played with.
Played with: Miles Davis, Chas Lloyd, John Coltrane, Metheny, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, John Abercrombie, Chick Corea, John Scofield, the list goes on.
Yep . I once owned a new ( played only by JD ) Sonor drum set that Sonor Canada supplied to Jack to use at the 2002 Montreal Jazz Festival . Had it shipped to Japan and kept it until we moved from the countryside - where I had my own drum house/studio next to the main house and played / kept all my drums & cymbals - to the city where I now have just a humble space on the 2nd floor to play my little 4 piece Yamaha set . Wish I hadn’t sold that set , but I could say that about many others that I have owned over the decades .
Very cool! Jack DeJohnette, truly one of the greats. To have a kit he played is an honor.
A similar story: Billy Joel played a Q&A Concert at Cornell University in 1996, for which a local music store supplied a Kurzweil PC88 concert performance piano/controller. Shortly after that I was looking to buy one for my own use, and was able to purchase that one "new" i.e. played only by BJ. It became a treasured piece in my musical inventory; I still have it and it's my main keyboard.
