LOS ANGELES — Mitt Romney’s brother filed for divorce just four months before his estranged wife plunged to her death from a California parking garage – and tried to make sure courts awarded her nothing in the split, according to documents.
George Scott Romney, 81, filed the case against 64-year-old Carrie Elizabeth Romney on June 12, citing “irreconcilable differences,” according to court documents obtained by The Post.
Despite being married more than eight years, starting in 2016, he said that they had no shared property that needed to be divided by the courts.
Romney also sought to “terminate the court’s ability to award support” to either person, court documents show, suggesting he wanted to make sure the courts didn’t step in and give his wife any assets.
Other documents from the split – filed by Romney as the petitioner – noted that both parties had agreed to “mediate property and support.”
Carrie, however, filed documents requesting spousal support.
She has had an unsteady history with money, notably filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2001 with a former husband.
Carrie’s body was found at the base of a Valencia parking garage on Friday evening night.
It remains unclear whether she fell or if she jumped.

Meh. No one is more willing to denounce a Romney more than I am, but the article doesn’t even take a swing at explaini CA family law. He was probably structured with his seperate property segregated so there were little assets accrued during marriage. Seperate property generates seperate property income and it’s pretty easy to keep it seperate if that is your goal. The non spousal support was just a gambit. Well then, she earned a settlement. Ew.
Well, he is a lawyer, so maybe he got a “courtesy” from her lawyer. He kept the gold; she got the shaft.
Since she was “poor” when they married, there should have been a pre-nup; and most probably he said “either no pre-nup, or no marriage.” That's where she messed up.
Not many 64 year old women are base jumpers or climbers, so this incident is obviously not “accidental” in nature. Don’t know if she had any motivations for suicide, but since California is a community property state, I would not think she was distraught over becoming financially destitute. That seems to point toward her being a victim of some form of criminal attack.
