It could just as easily have been another car. I think the person opening their door has a responsibility to see if anything is coming.
Helmet rules tend to be more lax overseas. Wonder if that factored in at all. Very sad.
Rest In Peace, Wanda.
No - had never heard of her
Car door opens, bicycle and bicyclist goes flying, and somehow the bikes handlebars ended up puncturing the bicyclist's jugular.
Pretty woman, but imdb says she was only in one episode of the show, so not much of a star, even on German TV.
I see too many people just fly open their car doors without looking, and it is especially dangerous when the doors are located on the side of oncoming traffic.
A person opening a door does not have a usable perspective to do that. The cyclist does. When I rode, I assumed any car was an enemy, especially the ones that came to a stop. It is so very common that someone is bound to open a door to get out; for, that is what the stop is all about.
“German actress known for her role of a police sergeant in the television series Großstadtrevier, played over ten years.”
That seems to be true. Also, German heads aren't as hard as they usually seem.
Or like how Natasha Richardson died after hitting her head skiing. “Talk and Die”.
AI-written articles have her dying at 89, instead of 41. That is our future.
That’s really unfortunate.
Accidents do happen. None of us knows the time or the place.
How about you, PJ? Have you laid up your riches in heaven?
Of course he does. There’s a side mirror; and most people who can drive are physically able to twist around and look to see what’s coming down the road.
That’s how I was taught, too.
There is nothing you can say that can convince me that the fault does not rest with the cyclist.
Yes, sadly she had worn no helmet.
I don’t know; but a biker can be very careful, and still crash if a door opens abruptly in front of them. (Some versions indicate that the car stopped suddenly in front of the biker.)
I guess we’ll see; but if anyone is accused of being guilty of causing the accident, I believe it will be the driver.
Not by passing a car that just stopped without giving clearance for the doors. My father taught me not to pass cars that just stopped. He told me to stop behind them to see what they do next. Consider a quick "Crazy Ivan".
I’m with you. Bicyclists in traffic should be treated like they are cars. If she were in a car and the car stopped in front of her she wouldn’t blow by close to the left side of the car. (I assume it is on the left side, if it were the right side on the sidewalk it would really be bad.) If she had just stopped, waited for the people to exit, she would be alive today.
Another point is a bicycle doesn’t have a lot of visibility.
I have seen bicycles speeding between two lanes of stopped traffic because they think they have enough room. I have seen motorcycles do that on the interstate as well. If someone were to open their door it would be a bad accident.
