GROK and CHatGpt report on the assassination attempts (primarily Butler, PA info). Sen Comer's House Task Force made referrals and Sen Grassley's work continues behind closed doors

Comer's House Task Force completed its investigative work during the last Administration and sent referrals to the DOJ.

Senator Grassley's oversight hearings regarding the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) policies and procedures have been closed to the public. His House Oversight work emphasizing Multi-agency oversight of USSS policies is still in progress.

I get the impression that Biden's DOJ/FBI investigations have left little if any evidence behind for the latest Trump Administration to work with, and so they are not investigating independently. Their work raised the issue of the shooting as a potential act of domestic terrorism.

I started my search by treating all three attempts (i.e., Crooks, Routh, and allegations of Iranian linked 'murder-for-hire' but found that, according to CHATGpt AI, the agencies involved (DOJ, DHS, FBI, Secret Service, GOA) focused on the Butler, Pensylvania attempt. This focus is likely due to concerns regarding Secret Service performance, and the issues of domestic and political violence have ben given priority.

For this reason, I focused on the first attempt and moved specific insights about the second and third attempts to the bottom of the report.

The following report is provided by GROK AI with some insertions from CHAT Gpt. I trimmed out content which I covered in my remarks above to streamline the text.

DOJ and FBI Actions, Reports, and Statements on Domestic Terrorism Aspects of the Butler Event

ChatGpt: The FBI, under the Department of Justice (DOJ), led the investigation into the July 13, 2024, attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, classifying it as both an assassination attempt and a potential act of domestic terrorism from the outset. This classification aligns with the federal definition of domestic terrorism under 18 U.S.C. § 2331(5), which includes acts intended to intimidate or coerce civilian populations or influence government policy through violence occurring primarily within the U.S. The FBI emphasized that political assassination attempts squarely fit this definition, highlighting the incident as ideologically motivated violence that threatens American identity and political processes.

Report on Investigations into the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania

This report focuses on the work of Representative James Comer (R-KY) through the House Oversight Committee and the bipartisan House Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit requested by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), and Senator Grassley's oversight efforts regarding U.S. Secret Service (USSS) policies and procedures.

The GAO report was initiated at Grassley's request in August 2024 and released in July 2025. Senator Grassley's investigation included letters requesting information and oversight on USSS failures.

Key letters include: Letter to USSS, FBI, DHS, and DOJ (July 17, 2024) and Request to DHS Inspector General (July 16, 2024). These letters sought details on security lapses, threat sharing, and agency coordination.

Employees Fired, Demoted, or Charged Related to the Assassination Attempt

No USSS employees were fired or criminally charged directly as a result of the July 13, 2024, attempt involving Thomas Matthew Crooks, based on available information.

However, Kimberly Cheatle (USSS Director) resigned on July 23, 2024, following congressional testimony on agency failures. In July 2025, six USSS personnel were suspended without pay for 10 to 42 days for conduct related to the Butler rally security lapses (names not publicly disclosed; agencies involved: USSS). Dates: Suspensions issued July 9-10, 2025.

Multiple agents were placed on administrative leave in August 2024 pending reviews (no names released; USSS). No demotions or criminal charges against federal employees were reported in connection with job performance failures.

Key Themes & Concerns Raised

Comer's Work (House Oversight Committee)

Priorities: Accountability for USSS operational failures, lack of coordination with local law enforcement, and resource denials for Trump's protection. Emphasis on transparency via hearings and document requests.

Key Themes: Inadequate planning, communication breakdowns, denial of additional security resources, and leadership accountability.

Hyperlinked Documents: Opening Statement at Oversight Hearing (July 22, 2024); Subpoena to USSS Director (July 17, 2024).

Outcomes: Resulted in subpoenas (e.g., to Cheatle) and referrals for further investigation, but no indictments or DOJ referrals from Comer's direct work to date.

GAO's Work

Priorities: Auditing USSS threat information sharing and procedural reforms post-Butler. Emphasis on long-term agency improvements, conducted from August 2024 to July 2025.

Key Themes: Failure to share classified threat intelligence with protective details (e.g., Iranian threat 10 days prior), preventable security lapses, and recommendations for better training and communication.

Hyperlinked Documents: GAO Report on USSS Failures (July 13, 2025).

Outcomes: Focused on recommendations for USSS reforms.

Grassley's Work

Priorities: Multi-agency oversight of USSS policies, threat assessment, and coordination failures. Emphasis on whistleblower protections and classified intelligence sharing.

Key Themes: Monumental security failures, lack of threat information dissemination (e.g., no process for non-imminent threats), and paths for agency improvements; concerns over siloed practices and resource misallocation.

Hyperlinked Documents: Grassley Report on USSS Failures (July 12, 2025); Letters to Agencies (July 17, 2024).

Outcomes: Prompted DHS IG review and GAO audit; no subpoenas, indictments, or DOJ referrals from Grassley's work to date.

Comer's House Task Force

The bipartisan House Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump was established in July 2024 to investigate the Butler incident and prevent future failures.

Chairman: Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA); Ranking Member: Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO). Members: Reps. Laurel Lee (R-FL), Mark Green (R-TN), David Joyce (R-OH), Michael Waltz (R-FL), Clay Higgins (R-LA), Pat Fallon (R-TX), Lou Correa (D-CA), Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL).

Hyperlinked Documents: Interim Staff Report (October 21, 2024); Final Report of Findings and Recommendations (December 10, 2024); Redacted Interview Transcripts (2024); Request to ATF (October 3, 2024).

Investigation Work Prior to January 20, 2025

All Task Force work occurred in 2024, including site visits, 46 interviews, and reports detailing USSS planning failures, lack of coordination, and resource issues.

FBI and DOJ Investigations

The FBI and DOJ are not actively investigating the July 13, 2024, Butler attempt as of October 2025, as the shooter (Thomas Matthew Crooks) was killed at the scene, and it was deemed a lone actor incident with no clear motive identified.

The investigation focused on evidence collection and potential domestic terrorism.

FBI and DOJ Investigations Prior to January 20, 2025

FBI: Led criminal probe into Crooks, including device analysis (phone accessed July 15, 2024) and motive search (no ideology found; searches included Trump events and depressive disorders). Update on FBI Investigation (July 15, 2024).

DOJ: Supported FBI probe; no separate charges as Crooks deceased.

Outcomes: Subpoenas for evidence; no indictments, grand juries, or trials pre-2025 for Butler (lone actor confirmed).

Additional Information on Related Plots and Individuals Involved

Murder-for-Hire Plot Linked to Iran

The DOJ charged Farhad Shakeri (Iranian asset, believed in Iran), Carlisle Rivera, and Jonathan Loadholt on November 8, 2024, for murder-for-hire targeting Trump and dissidents in the New York City area. No convictions have been reported as of October 2025. The plot is linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). DOJ Press Release (November 8, 2024). No other nation-linked plots were reported.

Thomas Matthew Crooks (Butler, PA Assassination Attempt, July 13, 2024)

Thomas Matthew Crooks, aged 20, was killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper during the incident. Prior to the attempt, his parents contacted law enforcement on July 13, 2024, reporting him missing and expressing concern about his whereabouts, as he had taken his father's AR-15-style rifle. No prior criminal record or enforcement-related contacts with law enforcement are reported.

Regarding mental health, the FBI stated there was "no indication of any mental health issues," though Crooks searched for major depressive disorder in April 2024. He was described as quiet and a loner, bullied "every day" at school for wearing camouflage. His father later told investigators he noticed Crooks' mental health declining in the year before the shooting, particularly after high school graduation, with signs of isolation. A relative described the family as "weird" with a "very strict" father who kept the family isolated. Crooks' parents are licensed social workers specializing in behavioral health. No known mental health treatments were reported.

Toxicology tests were negative for illegal drugs or alcohol; however, bile and hair samples were collected for potential long-term drug screening but omitted from the final report, raising questions about possible prescription medications for mental health conditions. No evidence of illegal or prescription drug use was confirmed.

Ryan Wesley Routh Assassination Attempt (September 15, 2024, West Palm Beach, FL)

Ryan Wesley Routh was indicted on September 24, 2024, and convicted on September 23, 2025, on charges of attempted assassination, firearm violations, and assault on a federal officer. He faces life in prison, with sentencing scheduled for December 18, 2025. Conviction Press Release (September 23, 2025). No press releases on additional charges or convictions were reported.

Prior to the attempt, Routh had extensive law enforcement contacts. In 1991, he chased and confronted a suspected rapist in Greensboro, NC, earning a "Law Enforcement Oscar" and "super citizen" honor from local police. Enforcement-related contacts include a 2002 three-hour standoff with police after a traffic stop, barricading with a machine gun, resulting in convictions for possessing a weapon of mass destruction, resisting officers, and driving offenses. In 2003, he was convicted of driving without a license, carrying a concealed weapon, and hit-and-run. In 2010, he was convicted of possessing stolen goods after a warehouse search revealed over 100 items. Overall, Routh faced over 100 criminal charges (mostly traffic, some violent) and at least eight arrests, all resulting in probation.

Regarding mental health, family members told investigators he had no diagnosed mental illness but "fixated" on things. Post-arrest evaluations (2024-2025) described him as "delusional" by mental health experts and jail professionals, with the defense considering an insanity plea. A Ukraine volunteer described him as "delusional," a "liar" with "delusions of grandeur," "disconnected from reality," combative, and argumentative. Another acquaintance in Ukraine (2022-2023) called him a "ticking time bomb," "volatile," "vengeful," and a "threat to others," reporting him to the FBI and Interpol in 2023.

His son expressed disbelief that his father would resort to violence. His daughter has not spoken to him since his conviction, noting an apparent courtroom suicide attempt post-2025. A neighbor described the family as "weird," with guns and a live horse in the house. Psychiatrists suggest a psychiatric disorder based on his behavior. No known mental health treatments were reported prior to the incident. Routh was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the incident, and no reported prescription or illegal drug use was confirmed.

WHO in his campaign decided Butler, PA was a good place to hold a rally? Someone had to make a decision. They had to do research. They had to talk to locals. WHO WERE THEY? They had to run it by SS. WHY was the NYT cameraman using a high speed camera set to a speed that could capture a bullet?

Why do I have more curiosity about this than the guy who was shot?

GROK and CHATgpt reports are even less reliable than Wikipedia articles.

Wikipedia is clearly biased and distorts facts that are inconsistent with the preferred narratives of their far left editors, but GROK and CHATgpt make stuff up. What they don’t hallucinate entirely, is based on Wikipedia articles and anything else they can scrape from the interweb.

Garbage in, garbage out.

These GROK and CHATgpt reports link official documents so that FReepers can check for themselves the sources of the information. This is more access to direct documents provided by most article threads posted about this kind of information.
