With two of the four remaining playoff-contenders, the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners, being among the five teams (Padres/Rays/Rockies) which still have never won a World Serious, I thought a quick look-back is in order at all the recent first-time champions, including three of the most recent eight years:
2023 TEXAS RANGERS
2019 WASHINGTON NATIONALS (nee MONTREAL EXPOS)
2017 HOUSTON ASTROS
2002 ANAHEIM ANGELS
2001 ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
1997 FLORIDA MARLINS
1992 TORONTO BLUE JAYS
1980 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES *
1985 KANSAS CITY ROYALS
1969 NEW YORK METS
1966 BALTIMORE ORIOLES (nee ST. LOUIS BROWNS) *
1955 BROOKLYN DODGERS *
* The Dodgers, Orioles and finally the Phillies were the last of the original sixteen franchises to win it all--all the others listed above were expansion clubs begun in 1961 or later. After the Dodgers, the next most recent were the 1935 Tigers (Ty Cobb was never a world champion), 1926 Cardinals, 1924 Senators, 1923 Yankees (watch out for these guys!), 1920 Indians, 1919 Reds, 1914 Braves (the "Miracle Braves"), 1910 Athletics, 1909 Pirates, 1907 Cubs (the winningest team ever), 1906 White Sox (the "Hitless Wonders"), 1905 Giants, and 1903 Red Sox.
Several teams have appeared in so many World Series that they have impeded other clubs:
YANKEES 41
DODGERS 22
GIANTS 20
CARDINALS 19
ATHLETICS 14
RED SOX 13
However, in the past decade all but the Dodgers are spinning their wheels, allowing teams who have never won to step up to the plate.
Rooting for Mariners and Brewers to make it so at least one new team will win.
Go BrewCrew!
The Cubs win in 2016 should count as a first time win as the counter should reset every 100 years.
Missed the 2010 SF Giants - first World Series win.
Brewers. Wisconsin voted for Trump.
First time ever American League Championship Series is being played completely outside of America!
hopefully Seattle beats toronto. I heard the new Canadian dork PM tell Trump he’d see him at the World Series....
BTW, the #1 Brewers v. #3 Cubs series was the REAL World Series this year. A great series. The #1 Brewers vs. #4 LA should be good but the Brewers should take LA because LA has bullpen problems.
For whatever reason this year, the National League teams pretty much outshine the American League teams except for the NYY. The #1 Brewers, statistically the best team in the MLB, should win the WS.
Is there a chance more than one new team will win? 🤨
The Giants have won eight times, beginning in 1905. I ignored franchise relocations.
Both of those teams started their franchises in Seattle. The Mariners, in 1998 featured Ken Griffey Jr, Alex Rodrigues, Edgar Martinez and Randy Johnson. Four Hall of Famers. Well three, but you know what I mean. They finished below .500. Dude, if you can’t get to the World Series with that lineup...
I was born in Milwaukee, and I think of it as one of those places that gets no respect (like Buffalo, Cleveland, etc.). So I am rooting for the Brewers to get to the top this time. Go Brewers!
Mariners will roll over the field.
I am a Braves fan, but find myself pulling for the Brewers.
I don’t like the city , but I like the way they play Baseball.
“the Brewers should take LA because LA has bullpen problems.” the Phillies were hoping the same thing.
Ah, don’t do that. The Brewers were born in Seattle, UUSR as well. If I remember correctly, one season as the Pilots (1969 ?) before turning tail to Beertown, USA
The Cubs ruined Back to the Future by not winning in 2015. They should be stripped of 2016 for that reason alone
A “Seattle” team will win if the Mariners and Brewers make it to the WS. After all, the Brewers used to be the Seattle Pilots.
