The planet has entered a ‘new reality’ as it hits its first climate tipping point, landmark report finds

The planet is grappling with a “new reality” as it reaches the first in a series of catastrophic and potentially irreversible climate tipping points: the widespread death of coral reefs, according to a landmark report produced by 160 scientists across the world.

As humans burn fossil fuels and ratchet up temperatures, it’s already driving more severe heat waves, floods, droughts, and wildfires. But there are even bigger impacts on the horizon. Climate change may also be pushing Earth’s crucial systems — from the Amazon rainforest to polar ice sheets — so far out of balance they collapse, sending catastrophic ripples across the planet.

“We are rapidly approaching multiple Earth system tipping points that could transform our world, with devastating consequences for people and nature,” said Tim Lenton, a professor at the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter and an author of the report published Sunday.

Warm water corals are the first, according to the report.

Since 2023, the world’s reefs have been enduring the worst mass bleaching event on record as oceans reach record high temperatures, with more than 80% affected. What was an underwater riot of color and life is being replaced with a bleached, seaweed-dominated landscape.

“We have now pushed (coral reefs) beyond what they can cope with,” said Mike Barrett, chief scientific advisor at the World Wildlife Fund UK and co-author of the report. Unless global warming is reversed “extensive reefs as we know them will be lost,” the authors wrote.

The impacts will have far-reaching consequences. Coral reefs are an essential habitat for marine species, vital for food security, contribute trillions to the global economy and buffer coastal areas from storms.

Modern corals first appeared in the Cretaceous Period. That was one of the warmest times on earth. There were no polar ice caps and shallow seas covered most of the western US and Canada. I think they will be just fine.

Diatomaceous Earth is found in abundance in these places that were once under these seas. It is the compacted fossilized remains of diatoms (algae).

Will the planet have a statement later today about how the “grappling” is going?

“the first in a series of catastrophic and potentially irreversible climate tipping points”

how can there be more than ONE tipping point? ... does that mean the first few “tipping points” aren’t REALLY tipping points because nothing actually tipped over? ... AND how can a “tipping point” really be a tipping point if it’s POTENTIALLY REVERSIBLE?

oh, and exactly HOW MANY “tipping points” are in a SERIES of tipping points? ... dozens, hundreds, thousands?

So my hour drive to the shore will be quicker? Will my black walnut trees be replaced with palm trees and can I grow bananas in New England?

Someone posted a picture of Plymouth Rock yesterday on Facebook with the caption that read that the SEA LEVEL was exactly the same as it was 420 years ago.

What BS

Coral near enough to be observed is often killed off by idiot divers who graze the coral with their fins, sometimes by these very same “scientists.”

Any skilled diver knows not to touch the coral. (a) Coral hurts if touched by open skin, and (b) coral dies easily when touched — it’s a PH thing — or hit by a fin. Those great big things most people think of as coral are not the actual animals who create and maintain the coral. Those little critters are actually very small.

This has nothing to do with the scam called “climate change.” It’s just more of the same BS.

PS Yes, the climate is changing. We are still coming out of an ice age. Any real scientist knows this.

So, how much do we have to tip these “scientists” to make them go away? Tipping point, my arse.

The first “tipping point” was when Guam tipped over and fell into the sea.

All because we drove to work in the morning in gas powered cars.

We have been through this “dying coral reefs” BS before. The examples shown on TV with great consternation were then with no fanfare demonstrated to have recovered a couple of years later. It seems that this happens and probably has happened since there were coral reefs.

Such arrogance, talking as those this is empirically proven science at a global level...that they “know” all the “tipping points”.

Unreal.

They've been arguing about "Climate Change" since the 60s. Is the planet warming or cooling?

All of it, according to the left, due to human activity, particularly in the US - while ignoring the vast amount of pollution, air and water, created by India and China.

“The planet is on the brink of several more tipping points..”

Seems like we got tipping points to spare.

Just part of the annual hysterical run-up to the next COP, which will be held in November in Brazil. Every year about this time they conjure up new menaces and the media duly reports their alarming conclusions. All intended to steer people’s attention to the climate change hoax so they will notice the COP confab when it happens.
