About 15 months ago I had open heart surgery, the very first meal they brought me the morning after surgery included fully caffeinated coffee, which was surprising to me.
I don’t think the medical system is very smart about food, nutrition and health. The Food Pyramid most of us grew up with is proof of that. It’s a large part of why RFK’s MAHA efforts are a thing.
I don’t think caffeine in moderation is bad.
There are groups in the US that attempt to pound this caffeine is unhealthy narrative, but it’s garbage.
Same with booze in moderation.
Heck, as my grandmother was dying from CHF the doctor more or less told us (off line) that a glass of champagne in the morning (like a Mimosa) will help her.
There are a lot of things where certain groups, that because of their “belief” cultural or religious push certain things which aren’t really proven or science based: pork (Jews and Muslims), shellfish (Jews), caffeine (Mormons), meat et al. (All these vegetarian types), alcohol (Muslims, 7-day, some Baptists)...
Many of these groups pretend as if their self imposed dietary restrictions are somehow healthy, environmental, ethical (the animal cruelty angle) and there is a science backing it up according to them.
Often this spills over into the mainstream, as Kosher did years past, or they try to push it as a lot of the vegetarian nonsense until just recently, with even the WHO getting behind it (they pushed a health and climate change argument).
Regards climate change and cattle. My second wife comes from a family of ranchers. They have 200 cows among other animals. I learned a lot from them regards all this sustainable and climate argument. It’s 100% Bullshit.
Do you think they put the cows on ground where you could be raising crops and making money? Nope.
Guess what cows do as they walk around and crap a massive amount BTW, on soil that isn’t all that ideal for growing things? Guess what cow poop is good at doing?
The arguments they feed people appeal to ignorance but once you start looking into it, it’s not at all like they claim.
Enjoy your pink tender steak.
It’s not bad for you in moderation, it doesn’t reduce the crop production nor does it produce a lot of CO2, bla bla bla. They “create the science” to justify what is a forgone conclusion based on some philosophy they embrace.
It’s not only good for circulation and heart rhythm but stimulates your bowels and if you’re already accustomed to drinking coffee in the morning, without it you’re likely to get a headache from withdrawal, but a post-op headache is a nightmare to all concerned. I can’t tell you how many times as an intern/resident/attending I wound up telling the staff to just give the patient a cup of coffee for their headache and the magic worked.
But a workup for a headache post-op? It can take hours and thousands of dollars of diagnostics.

I’d be far more worried about what else was on that tray.
