Under Michigan law, citizens 0:17 who are charged with civil infractions 0:19 can either pay a fee or request a 0:21 hearing. However, criminal defendants 0:23 are required to appear at a formal 0:24 arraignment in court, even if they are 0:26 only charged with a misdemeanor traffic 0:27 offense. Mr. Glenn was scheduled for an 0:30 arraignment for the misdemeanor offenses 0:31 and a hearing for these civil 0:33 infractions on June 6th, 2025, but he 0:36 failed to appear in court. Default 0:38 judgments were issued for the civil 0:39 infractions as permitted by Michigan 0:41 law. However, courts cannot issue 0:43 default judgments for criminal offenses. 0:45 So, a so-called show cause hearing was 0:48 scheduled for August 19th, 2025 as 0:50 required by Michigan Court Rule 6.615. A 0:53 so-called show cause hearing is a court 0:56 proceeding that occurs after a missed 0:58 court date or another violation of a 1:00 court order where the defendant is 1:02 required to appear and explain why they 1:04 missed the arraignment and why they 1:06 shouldn't be held in contempt or face 1:08 additional penalties. Mr. Glenn also was 1:10 charged with four additional traffic 1:12 offenses on May 21st, 2025, one civil 1:15 infraction and three misdemeanors, 1:17 including a charge of driving with a 1:19 suspended license. The arraignment was 1:21 scheduled for the misdemeanor offenses 1:22 on July 3rd, 2025, and Mr. Glenn did not 1:25 appear. So, another show cause hearing 1:28 was scheduled for July 28th, 2025. Defendant shows up for video hearing while driving, although it is for traffic offenses and his license is suspended. Defendant extremely disrespectful. Judge orders defendant to show up for in person hearing the next day. He fails to show up for that and a warrant is issued for his arrest.
