A Reddit post showing how one woman was rewarded for more than a decade of service at her job has struck a nerve online.
The post by u/BigZee004, shared to the subreddit Mildly Infuriating, has received more than 42,000 upvotes since it was shared on October 1.
The viral image shows what the poster’s girlfriend was given for 11 years at her company: a single mini candy bar tied with a “thank you” tag. In tiny print, the tag reads, “We appreciate your dedication and loyalty over the past 11 years.”
The poster added in the comments: “This was in lieu of an increase. Which makes it more insulting.”
(snip)
Thousands of Reddit users shared similar stories of lackluster recognition.
“Is 11 years significant? I would have thought 10 years would be when you expect a little more,” one user wrote.
Another commented, “I had my 10 years of service some months ago. I did not even realize at first until someone asked me how long I had been working there. Got no gift or notification at all.”
A third added, “My partner got a sticker for his hard hat for 15 years.”

I liked that you noticed the Principal who was an Infantry Leader and knew the importance of morale. And morale isn’t even awards... often it’s just a word of appreciation.
I got a rock.
Seriously, I worked for 3 places that had anniversary gifts, 2 got acquired just as I was approaching the anniversary time and cancelled the practice. The third I got laid off just as I approached it.
I’m now 13 years at my current location and have been promoted up the chain - but no anniversary gift!
I work, I get satisfaction from my work, I get paid. That’s good enough for me.
11 years? Hell I was just getting started.
39 years. Best job I ever had.
Maybe they were saying she was hangry?
Exactly. And a number of the stories on there are complete fiction.
I was shocked when the office threw me a surprise party on my 70th birthday 18 months ago. Great company, we’re treated well.
Have you ever heard of a wish sandwich? A wish sandwich is the kind of a sandwich where you have two slices of bread and you, hee hee hee, wish you had some meat...
Bow bow bow...
She coulda got a rubber biscuit. What a whiner.
It is a problem if she’s diabetic. Then it should be sugar free. /sarcasm
I don’t. I prefer to toil in the shadows
Yes; after years of working in a different institution where everyone felt unappreciated and often downright abused, it was a wonderful experience.
When my wife worked for a school district and one year, all the paras received a stapled notepad that the school administrator had been instructed to cutout from used, one sided white paper. She fought the principal saying it was an insult but made to hand deliver them to each para and apologized to each of them as she handed them out.
Friend of mine and I worked at an insurance company and he was on a project with long hours and no OT or comp time. At the project recognition party, each of the project team members were given a $5 coupon to the company cafeteria. Someone complained to the state & the company had to go back through all timesheets and offer OT or Comp Time.
Every five years, my husband’s job gives him a catalog of cool stuff and says pick something.
Nice monster outdoor grill, camping equipment, a beautiful gold and diamond ring for me one year, and watch, along with the typical plaque and keychain.
Best part of the job? No one bothers him. They give him projects and get out of his way. He gets the job done right, on time, and under budget. He got high marks from all the senior leaders that came through over the years and was tapped several times for a leadership position.
Only once did he have a GM that was a complete jerk. He reached out to the DM and asked for a transfer. The DM, his former GM, was shocked. “Why?”
My husband said he was not satisfied with the new GM’s level of professionalism and would prefer another location.
DM and HR came for a visit. A week later, GM got the boot.
Don’t start none, won’t be none.
It’s the RED STAPLER that shows they care...
No, it actually wrote. It was a nice pen, too. Good name brand.
When I was laid off from Digital Equipment Corporation in 1992 everyone in the group signed a dollar bill and gave it to me. I spent it that afternoon.

One anniversary we were given the choice of a tie tack or cuff links. Finally someone chimed in and pointed out that we don’t all work in an air conditioned office.
Things got better after that but I would have rather have a decent meal at some local restaurant.
Hindsight is 20-20. When you look at how things get done it’s easy to see why wars get started.
I recently celebrated 10 years with my current company (13 years if you include time as a contractor). No recognition, but:
I now get 200 hours (25 days) of PTO, up from 160 hours (20 days).
They also found me a position on a new team when we lost the contract I was working under, instead of getting laid off the way several teammates with less time in did. I’m pushing 60 and did not relish having to look for work again.
I was at my company over 30 years. I got to share a cake with my co-workers.
