Putin knows this and it is part of why Russia invaded Ukraine. In essence, Putin believes that once conquered, Ukrainians can be Russianized so as to offset Russia’s demographic decline. This reasoning is unsound in that Ukrainians do not want to be Russianized, and Russia’s combat losses are large enough to aggravate Russia’s demographic decline.
Far too many just do not understand how it works in the real world. I think you are spot on...

When Putin invaded in Feb 2022, his plan was to decapitate the Kiev central government and to capture-annex Ukraine within 3 weeks. Putin's scheme was to get 42 million new Ukrainian Slavs to add to Russia's 107 million Slavs aka ethnic Russians. Putin can see that his ethnic Russians have miserable birthrates, while Russia's minorities and Muslims have higher birthrates.
Putin's plan was that once he had 159 million Slavs at his command, he will have an easier time lording over the formerly communist Eastern Bloc nations, that the old USSR once dominated.
We’ll probably break up first.
Or maybe the West would have had a harder time lording it over Russia.
