The Trump administration has stepped up unannounced inspections targeting foreign students in the United States under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme, with a sharp focus on those in the two-year STEM OPT extension. Officials have even been visiting student residences and university housing facilities for verification, according to immigration attorneys, as reported by Lubna Kably in The Times of India.

The Open Doors report for 2023-24 shows that 3.3 lakh Indian students were in the US, with nearly 97,556 enrolled in the OPT programme, many in STEM-OPT. This makes them one of the largest groups affected by the checks.

“I just received this inspection unexpectedly today at my residence and was requested additional documents,” said a student whose STEM-OPT was recently approved, according to Lubna’s report. Another student confirmed regular checks at university housing, while a third reported being questioned despite having moved from F-1 to H-1B status.

A couple of the sites we support had OPT workers. Easy job fills for OPT designees because the vacancies were statutorily prohibited under Federal law from paying more than the State minimum wage plus 50 cents per hour. So, no native-born students applied. Worked with the best network designer ever as a result of the OPT.

Did the native-born even know about it? If I had known about it 30-40 years ago, I would have considered it.

They knew about it. It was at a college where it was posted on-line, on bulletin boards, mentioned in classes, etc. No benefits - just wages and it lasted one year, but a good learning experience based on what I observed.
