To baffle means to puzzle someone so deeply as to result in them being defeated in battle. Hence, baffling on a ship renders the ship difficult to detect.
These headlines always use, “baffle,” as if it were so disconcerting that it shook their faith to the core. I dare say that this inspired the physicist’s curiosity more than their defeat.
