This guy doesn't appear to be mentally disturbed like many other of these shooter. Rather, he was very deliberate in wanting to kill Charlie for his political activism.
In this picture, you can see that it didn't turn out like he thought it would. Sure, he might be a hero to a tiny group of idiots, but his life is effectively over and he his reviled by a majority of the country. Meanwhile, the praise for Kirk will only grow.
