Candy was a very funny man. But he ate too much, smoked too much and drank too much.

He seemed like a good guy that couldn’t overcome his addictions.
Roger Ebert told the story of finding John drinking alone in a bar one night, shortly after Planes Trains and Automobiles came out. He thought that no one really liked him.
Really sad.

I think it was during the filming of Stripes, Candy kept a bathtub full of beer because where it was filmed was a dry county.

There’s also a story about when he was filming Splash that the night before they filmed the racquet ball scene, he had spent the night before partying with Jack Nicholson into the wee hours of the morning. I look forward to seeing the documentary.

But the thing is that during his stand-up comedy routines every other word out of his mouth was an expletive.

My wife and I just enjoyed the man.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was just a perfect film and you can’t help but tear up.
I can say I visited the hotel that the “pillows” scene was filmed in—simply because of that movie.

Candy played in about as many movies as Kevin Bacon. IMHO he did the best at being the everyman character. It allowed me to insert myself into the movie like I could be a part of it.

His oompah band leader role on “Home Alone” was funny and sweet. maybe the best part of that movie.

Thinking about it now, Jennifer Sullivan has officially outlived her father (she turned 44 last year), and Chris Candy is now 40.
John died at 43.

Braidwood, IL.
It was called the “Braidwood Inn” until someone bought it 10-15 years ago.
