When the general assembly decided to build a state university here 235 years ago, they named the town for a church built by the British.
The little chapel on the hill was actually called New Hope.

Vince Lombardi was once asked what was the secret to being a great coach. His response was “Get great players.”
“high school kids and boosters have to be schmoozed and from the outside” Do you remember Woody Hayes? Chances are you are way too young.
Sanders gave him hope.
Yep, players make the coach, not vice versa.
You assumed wrong, I know Woody Hayes well, I remember him slugging a Clemson player after an interception which led to his firing, the play took place in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.
Guys like Woody Hayes could not survive in today’s world of college football unless he radically changed his style, he’s been gone for nearly 50 years.
It’s very rare for a college coach to move up to the NFL and be successful, Jimmy Johnson is one of the rare exceptions, conversely NFL head coaches moving down to coach at the college level are going to find it’s very difficult to make the switch, especially now in college football, players can leave at any time, players are basically free agents every year.
No Tom Brady’s exist in college football, players don’t stay in one place for 5-10 years, the rosters get turned over in college football every 3-4 years.
Bill Belichick has become a national laughingstock. That will poison recruiting except for the portal mercenaries who only want the big check, and UNC doesn’t need Belichick for that.
I always thought he was hired as a Hail Mary attempt to convince UNC’s big booster donors that UNC was serious about winning. Then he beclowned himself. Couldn’t get much worse.
Florida State, Miami, and Ga Tech would disagree with you.
That’ll be a big payout. Bet they wait a few more weeks.
In other college football news, Michael Vick’s debut as Norfolk State’s head coach was a losing effort as the Towson Tigers defeated the Spartans 27-7 .
Hopefully no dogs as mascots.
Their new cheer... We don't smoke, We don't drink, Norfolk, Norfolk!!!
*** I enjoyed every minute of that a$$ whipping last night.***
Me too! The media had me convinced before kickoff that UNC was going to win handily.
I couldn’t have been happier to see Belicheat humiliated like that.
The home team fans left in the middle of the THIRD quarter!! In droves!! I laughed so hard last night.
Mr. Spartan.
Norfolk State does have a good marching band .
I meant no offense. Of course, times have changed; college sports are so mixed up with portal eligibility, millionaire recruits, mega conferences, etc, I wonder whether they’ll survive.
Not to defend Belichick, it may turn out to be a disaster, but I also think about Bear Bryant and The Junction Boys, and what a disastrous first season they had. But Bear was planting the seeds.
From what I heard, there were 70 new players on the UNC team. It’s hard to expect the team to gel right away.
When Charlotte played App State last week, both teams were almost all portal players.
You have to look at what kind of team culture is being built.
UNC may struggle to win 4 games, but if they improve over the course of the season, and they’re still playing hard for Belichick, then it might work out in the end.
Week One is a lot of fun for knee-jerkers.
Eventually college football will get worked out, the solution IMO is collective bargaining, much like you see in professional sports, some type of agreement with the players on some rules that will bring some type of order to college football.
Right now, it’s chaos and some order and rules need to be established.
I laughed, Alexa laughed, Siri laughed, the refrigerator laughed...
The nature of sport is that, unless there’s a retirement which I don’t think there was here, a new coach inherits a team bad enough to get the old coach fired. You don’t fix that in one off season. Really you’re just hoping for signs of progress, a couple more wins than last year. Patience.
