On seeing two hijabs at the supermarket

One of my struggles as a self-declared decent person is the tug between my intellectual abhorrence of Islam and my response at a personal level when I see Muslim women walking about with their hair hidden under hijabs. I would never insult or belittle such women to their faces, and I would treat them with courtesy and respect.

But I can’t help but think that at some point, there might be so many hijabs walking around that we stand in real danger of being forced to submit to sharia law. We would have to look the other way as Islam’s indignities are visited upon women, gays, Christians, and Jews.

Those were my thoughts yesterday at the supermarket. A mother and her preteen daughter, both wearing very handsome hijabs, were shopping there. The daughter was chattering happily to her mom, who was very attentive to the girl. In all, it was a sweet scene of familial love and affection. Only the hardest of hearts could disparage it.

But immediately accompanying those benign thoughts were images of what’s happening in Europe and the U.K., and what is now happening in isolated spots (Hamtramck) in the U.S.: Muslim immigrants who see no need to assimilate into the Western cultures they actually despise and whose laws they refuse to recognize or obey.

(They are not like the Amish, another religious sect, who once chose to disobey certain “English” laws such as compulsory public education but did not resist them in a violent or contemptuous manner.)

Then my mind reeled back to Jefferson’s statement about a fundamental aspect of the American belief in freedom of religion: “But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”

The author doesn’t mention his reaction to seeing Orthodox Jewish women who also need to cover their hair

I used to spend a lot of time in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. More recently, I lived near an Orthodox Jewish enclave in north central Phoenix (Synagogue, several kosher restaurants and grocers). Many of the women cover their hair by wearing a wig. They are following the law to the letter, but fit in as well as the many "goyim" and black women who wear wigs as well. They are dressed more femininely and modestly, but do not particularly stand out unless they are next to a husband wearing a Fedora or Biber hat and a full beard, white shirt, and no tie.

In the area where I live they have been around since I was a child. I guess I don’t give it a second thought.

I also live in a community where there is a Hebrew school and a bunch of hassidic jews. I have been approached by more aggressive hassidic jew school kids than muslim kids.

But, we all know it’s the Mennonites that we have to watch out for. Those folks will slap you in the face with a blackberry pie. (Just kidding...I love their pies.)

Western civilization is infused with Christianity / Christian values and norms. For that reason, even non-believers (as long as they were acculturated in the West) will not find friendly interactions with Christian clericals abrasive or offensive.

Would you please specify what you mean by "approached aggressively?" Are you talking about schoolyard bullying, the hurling of ethnic slurs - or what?

But Islam has its own set of beliefs, which surely do pick your pocket or break your leg (or kill you) if fully implemented. Pay the jizya and submit, be enslaved or die for being an infidel. Islam must be recognized as a sociopolitical system masquerading as a religion, and treated as such.

So we should not be concerned with someone who willingly lies to you because they are promoting Islam with taqiyya, lying to your face, since they are promoting your conversion to Islam?

Ah…,the mistake you make is talking to them. When I go to the grocery store the only people I talk to are the butcher and produce people….and the cashier.

If I run into a friend of my wife’s I will chat.
