Almost half of adults say they are ordering kids' meals. Here's what's behind the trend.

Almost half of U.S. adults say they're ordering from restaurant kid menus in order to save money when they go out to eat and to opt for smaller portions, new research shows.

About 44% of adults surveyed by Lightspeed Commerce, a provider of point-of-sale technology for hospitality businesses, said they're ordering from the kids' menus at restaurants. Kids' meals are traditionally less expensive than those on adult menus because portion sizes are usually smaller.

The trend comes as some consumers are cutting back on eating out, with McDonald's and Wendy's earlier this month reported sluggish breakfast sales. The companies attributed the trend to heightened economic uncertainty and pressures facing low-income consumers.

Adult diners said smaller portions, simpler menus and lower prices are compelling them to turn to kids' menus, Lightspeed said.

"Whether it's a mini burger or mac and cheese, the kids' menu is becoming a smart option — not just a nostalgic one," Lightspeed researchers said.

The cost of fast food has also skyrocketed over the past decade, according to a 2024 report by FinanceBuzz. The personal finance site found that the price of a McDonald's Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal more than doubled in price from $5.39 in 2014 to $11.99 in 2024.

At McDonald's, a six-piece chicken McNugget Happy Meal, which comes with fries, milk and apple juice, costs $5.99. By comparison, an order of six McNugget's from the burger chain's McValue menu costs $5.59, but doesn't include fries or drinks.

Eating at restaurants has become more costly, with the most recent consumer price index data, which measures changes in the price of everyday goods, showing that the cost of dining out has risen 3.9% over the past 12 months.

“Me and the wife always split a nice meal when we go out.”

My husband and I do the same. One orders an entree; the other orders a salad.

That doesn't make sense. It's way more expensive at a restaurant than home. I don't understand al these people who think it's cheaper to eat out.

If you refuse to eat meat, what do you eat, bugs?

That’s pretty bad! I guess he’d think I was a fool for making and serving 12 ounce homemade fruit smoothies (each) to our tree workers crew (4 adults) who were working on one of the hottest days of the year recently. I was going to offer just water, but then had the idea of fruit smoothies instead. They loved ‘em! Took a quick break and had new energy to complete the job!

Maybe your supervisor knew he wouldn’t be able to eat a larger meal. I can’t even eat half as much as I used to.

“8 bucks for a Whopper at Burger King, and it does not even come with cheese. They can keep it.

A “Bacon Whopper” can be cut in half. YUM...

McDonald’s is outrageously overpriced these days and it seems the food size has been shrunk. I don’t like being gouged so I’ve been staying away. There used to be long lines of cars going through their drive thru, not anymore. Now I’ve seen lunch hour with hardly any cars going thru. I don’t know about Wendy’s because I rarely ever go there.

The millionaire and the rest of us were all a social group, all of us helping a mutual elderly friend, he was my best friend for over 40 years, one of the five was his girlfriend and the millionaire and his wife were acquaintances to him from admiring his art, the elderly artist being the fifth.

I haven’t noticed any place that hasn’t increased prices even Walmart is in on the act.

A can of soup went from $1.50 to $2.00 or more depending on brand.

Meat counters look like visitors only and move on.

Fast food joints sell a hamburger starting at $5.90 a pop here in LA.

“Cutting back”, because they still can’t break the habit of being too lazy to prepare even simple food at home.

It was absolutely real, a really strange event, believe it or not, he was Jewish.

We didn’t like each other, it really bothered him that I was the artist’s best friend and had been for over 40 years, my friend was European and elegant and worldly while the sandwich guy was a rich but small minded groupie seeking some prestige, and he resented that I was an intimate with a casual beer drinking, mutual overnight visits buddy relationship, and he wasn’t, and never would be.

He did fine at our office Thanksgiving and Christmas lunches. 😁
